I call it the Curse of Don Mattingly. Before I begin, I'm not bashing Donnie Baseball. He was a good ballplayer who did wonderful things for the Yankees during their Dark Ages. However, it must be noted:

1. The Yankees, from the time Mattingly made his 1983 debut for them until his last season in 1995, made th playoffs only once (1995).

2. During the Mattingly era, the Yankees suffered through some of their worst seasons in franchise history.

3. Since Mattingly has returned as a coach, the Yankees have yet to return to the World Series. In fact, the past few seasons have witnessed embarrassing collapses for the Yanks during post-season play.

To me, the presence of Mattingly on the Yankees either as a player or coach has done nothing to raise their profile as the most dominant professional sports team. While other "curses" get more attention, this new one flies under the radar. Are all these instances coincidental, or can this "curse" be legit?

arabftw- Couldn't agree with you more about Marty. If they replaced him with someone like Bill Cowher, Bill Parcells, or Jimmy Johnson, then that move would have been justified. Norv Turner? C'mon now!

Interesting theory. It could explain a lot. However, I think the problem is mismanagement and ego-maina.

Nope they're not cursed, they have purely been dealing with the moments. it truly is all. D-backs were the more desirable team in 2001 international sequence (mainly because of Johnson and Schilling because the a million-2 punch). 2002, the Angels were the more desirable team. 2003 turned right into a unhappiness. which could favor to were the Yankees 365 days to win all of it, not the Marlins who shouldn't were there contained in the first position! 2004, the Yankees blew it after having a three-0 lead contained in the ALCS. 2005, Randy Johnson blew it for them in recreation 3 of the ALDS. 2006, the Tigers pitching humiliated the american hitters contained in the ALDS. 2007, both one among Wang's terrible outings fee them that sequence consisting of the computer virus-infested recreation 2. 2008, the Yankees were coping with losses to key gamers of the team by using injuries for a large number of the season which fee them to bypass over the playoffs for the first time in 15 years. the following is hoping that they could help turn it round in 2009 and previous... As for the Cubs, they purely would make some noise this 365 days yet you do not play the game on paper. You play it on the sphere.

I heard about this "curse" several months ago..........While I don't believe in curses the fact is that while Mattingly was a player the Yankees didn't win a series........The year after he left BINGO they were the World Champs...........The year before he came back they were again the World Champs.........Now during his present Yankee stint it's no series again.........Maybe Mattingly just isn't meant to get a ring????..........It is coincidental but a curse???.........I don't think so............CAT

The Red Sox were not cursed by selling Babe Ruth (well, maybe in the 20s and early 30s they were when he was still with the Yankees, but certainly not after that.)

The Cubs were not cursed by an angry fan who had to leave a game with his goat.

The Yankees aren't cursed by Mattingly.

Curses aren't real.
