English explorer (157?-1611) most known for his exploits in the 'New World'. Commissioned by the Dutch East India Company to explore the northwest passage and find trade routes to the far east. Said to be the first European explorer to voyage up the Hudson River (named for him), thinking it was part of the southwest passage to the far east, to a point where it could be no longer navigated (waterfalls). That point is now the town of Halfmoon (just north of Albany, NY), named after Hudson's ship, the Halve Maen (Half Moon). Also named for him are Hudson Bay in Canada (part of n.w. passage) and the city of Hudson in New York State, a city on the banks of the Hudson River approx 120 mi. north of NYC.

Henry Hudson was the name of a 16th century explorer (and possibly privateer). He sailed on a ship called the Half Moon, which sunk into the Hudson River's waters. The Hudson River is found in the eastern side of upstate New York (state, not the city). From my recollection, I'm not sure if he was sailing for the Dutch or for the English.

Henry Hudson (September 12, 1570s – 1611) was an English sea explorer and navigator in the early 17th century.
His place of birth was London, England. He is presumed to have died in 1611 in Hudson Bay, Canada, after he was set adrift, along with his son and eight others, by mutinous crewmen.
Hudson's early life is an unknown, but he is thought to have spent many years at sea. He is said to have begun as a cabin boy at 16 and gradually worked his way up to ship's captain.
