The Colts are the defending Superbowl champions and are currently undefeated also. So shouldn't it be Colts, Patriots, and then the Cowboys? I'm a Cowboys fan and can understand why they are ranked number 3. They are still a young team with a lot to proove, and still lack the experience that the Colts and the Patriots have. But the Patriots should be number 2, not number one. Who else agrees with me on this one?

gabrielmilloy - Wow, re-read your answer and tell me who's being stupid. Yes, the Patriots won 3 Superbowls, but it wasn't last year, or the year before for that matter. The Colts did beat them in the Playoffs last season, and won the Superbowl. From what I've remembered as a sports fan in general is, a team has the right to hold the crown until it is taken from them. In this case, defending champions and still undefeated.

What you did last season doesn't matter in rankings this season. Should the Bears be considered the second best in the league? Should the Saints be in the top 10, they went to the NFC Championship game last season.
Colts vs Pats - Offenses are pretty similiar in ability, Pats have put up some more points than Indy and currently look a little harder to stop. Defenses, no question pats have been better defensively, they have played some good offenses too(although they haven't had good defenses to contend with) so I think slight edge should go to the Pats.

The Colts are the defending champs, so they should be considered the best team in the world until the next Super Bowel champ is crowned. That does not mean that they are necessarily best ranked team during the course of the year.
The Patriots are the top ranked team because they have made huge improvements in the team over the off season. There has been many times over the five years when the Patriots beat teams that were more talented and much better on paper. The Colts with Peyton Manning, Marvin Harrison and Edgerrin James is a good example. The Patriots did not have the big name stars (Brady was a sixth round draft pick). The Patriots won by executing well (short passes and running plays with an occasional deeper throw), not making mistakes and have huge contributions from the defense and special teams. The team was also well coached. Last year the team went two deep in the playoffs with a very weak receiving squad.
This year the special teams and defense are again solid (winning by huge margins without Pro Bowlers Richard Seymour and Rodney Harrison) and the running game is solid (winning without starter Lawrence Maroney). Now for the first time in his career, Brady has a set of really talented receivers. Remember the Pats won with receivers that were fifth round draft picks (or sixth or seventh), ex arena football guys or worse. Everything else on the team is the same except they are deep with really solid (and some exceptional) receivers. This team is radically improved over last year and the best Patriots team ever fielded. That is why they are ranked #1.

Here is the reason why the pats are ranked over the colts:
Pats Offense rank in the league: 2nd
Defense: 2nd
Colts Offensive Rank: 3rd
Defense:6th
Tom Brady's QB Rating: 1st in league
PM: 3rd
Patriots outrank the colts in offense and defense. Also taken into account is that the colts won close ones vs. OK teams like the Titans and Texans, while the pats shut down the vaunted offenses of the Chargers and Bengals. Being SB champions the year before does not merit a #1 ranking throughout the next season. We will see for sure who deserves to be #1 Nov 4th. Cant wait

It has to do with team improvements made over the off season. Pats got Moss and Stalworth (bust), finally giving Brady the targets he cried about not having last season, so they were figured as the team to beat. Those who rank also know that players from last year are now a little bit more experienced and some are now a little bit older. Its all taken into consideration.
I would, however, not put too much importance on the ranking system. It all boils down to committee opinion so until they play the games and enter the playoffs feel good in the fact that your team is doing well and on the right track with its new head coach.

It has to do with the improvements they made over the offseason. Remember the Patriots were one dropped ball by Reche Caldwell away from a first down that would have kept a late drive alive in the AFC title game last year against the Colts. They have completely revamped their receiving corps and added Adlius Thomas on the D.
The Colts meanwhile lost Dominic Rhodes and Brandon Stokley. Neither one a major cog in the title team, but losses none the less.

I think the Pats are ranked at the top because all of their victories have come in such convincing fashion. Of course, you could make the argument that a lot of that has to do with the strength - or lack of strength - of their opponents.
I believe that this week's game will help clear things up a little. If the Pats win, then they probably have a pretty strong argument for being at the top. Until then, though, I do see your point. It's tough to devalue the Colts for not winning by enough points, especially since they've faced some tougher competition.

a million.) 49ers they have the main actual protection interior the league and terrific working pastime. they're an all around finished group. The lost to the Vikings became sturdy for them and could take that undefeated rigidity off them. They made it to the NFC championship final year and characteristic actually better this year. 2.) texans 3.) falcons 4.) ravens 5.) patriots 6.) packers 7.) broncos 8.) giants 9.) cardinals 10.) vikings, bears, eagles, steelers all tied

Because there offense has scored over 34 points in all of their games, while their defense has only allowed 17 points or under in all of their games so far. That's pretty damn good, and proves an undefeated team that wins like the Pats is better than a team who wins off last minute field goals.
If you're interested, I just created a sports forum. I think you should all join. It would be good to discuss, instead of going back and forth on here.

Strength of victory....and popular opinion. If they lose, they can fall. It really doesn't matter who is the current champion or what other teams are 5-0...if the Patriots weren't #1...and the Colts were...people would be asking why the Pats weren't the #1 team.

Due to the fact of all of the additions they made, and all of the personnel losses Indy suffered, not to mention the injuries Indy has had already this year. We will know for sure who is 1 and who is 2 in week 9 when they play. As for your cowboys, they shouldn't be ranked even as high as 3, there are at least 3 AFC teams better than them. Steelers, Titans, Chargers, and the Bengals. Dallas should be ranked 7th, at the highest. No NFC team can compete with the AFC elite, and it will be proved this weekend.
