I heard of this before and always wondered that also. here is what I found.

Do we need to have a HIV blood test done before marriage?

There is no law requiring HIV test before marriage, and no one should force you to take it against your wishes or by force. You do not need a HIV test before marriage if you have not had risky behavior, however, since people do not disclose their sexual history, it is best for both partners to get a HIV test done so that they can enter married life confident of each other. More and more couples (especially when people choose their own partners) are taking the test so that they can be sure that they are not marrying someone with HIV without knowing it.

I don't think that they "have" to get a blood test but I am sure that people get them to make sure they don't have HIV/AIDS or some other STD. Or.....they could be doing it to make sure that the kids are not going to be infected with something, like sickle cell or something like that.

Only a few states still require this. I think it started because of syphilis and to prevent intermarriage within families. Later other diseases came into play. Now most states have done away with this practice.

I don't know for sure but I would guess it's to prove that they are not related or have some horrific disease or that they really are who they say they are.
I'm in the UK and we don't have them here.

i don't think many states still require this, but it is done to make sure there is no relation and that the individuals are healthy.
