Doees this mean I have to change back to my avatar? I like the avatar I have now. how would my contacts know it's me! *hangs head and wimpers like a puppy*.

It depends on the name and avatar! If the avatar really stands out, I tend to remember that first, rather than the name. If the name is unusual, that sticks in my mind first.

Yahoo seems to have taken care of some of the avatars, so the smart@ss answers usually give them away.

Well I go by avatars which is sad, because Yahoo screws many of them up, including mine so I have to resort to the generic one.

Sometimes, it's the avatar and sometimes, it's the name. It's usually what is unique about them that I remember.
