I am going to try to make my costume for holloween this year and I can not find a pattern for what I want. I can sew, I know a few tricks, and I have all the supplies, but I am a little worried that I won't be able to get the exact look and fit that I want. I would love it if I could find a website that gave detailed instrctions and maybe pictures for different techniques, stitches, patterns, etc. Please help me!! :)

Jess, my best suggestion is the Sew Whats New Newsletter, edited by Mary Wilkins. You can find it at: http://sew-whats-new.com - though I'm an experienced seamstress, I find lots of useful tips about sewing that are new to me. Otherwise, just look around the Internet for "sewing tips" and be surprised. I've found lots of interesting stuff that way. -- Bjo

I'd say buy a cheap skirt-or whatever it is you want to learn to make-but not too cheap, you want to imitate good quality. Then tear it apart seam for seam, taking notes on how it is stitched together as you take apart. Then try to put it together yourself. Also, there are stores like joann fabrics that have sewing classes for beginners, you could take the class, but let the teacher know your specific interests or maybe meet someone in class who has knowledge and will share w/you.

Your best bet would probably be to get a pattern that's close, and then just add what you want onto the pattern. I don't know of any sites, but I get Sew News magazine and they do a lot of articles on it. Maybe you can read back issues in your local library? Or you can get books in the fabric store that tell you how to alter patterns.
