They are both used for connection of a monitor to your computer. The older way was VGA which is an analog signal. The upgrade version is DVI which is digital. Both require the same connection on both ends accept you can have a VGA cable with a DVI dongle that will allow you to connect to a DVI video card such as my dual monitor setup. The connections are usually depicted by a upside down Trapazoid shape that is Blue on the PC and a Blue end on the LCD side with a female conneciton for VGA and White and slightly bigger for DVI.

Their is usually a blue or white connector on the back of the CPU tower and the back of the Monitor. Most monitors come with the proper cables for connectivity.

Both are for connecting a display to a computer.

VGA is the older one, dating back to 1987. This is a 15 pin D shell connector, usually with blue plastic.
It carries the video information as three separate red green and blue analog signals.

DVI is a much newer connector, from the late 90s. It has higher quality connections. It consists of an array of 8 by 3 pins, plus a tab, possibly with four other pins around it. It should always use white plastic.

It comes in three different types:
DVI-A: This carries exactly the same signals as the VGA connector does, but in a different connector. This is for backward compatibility.
DVI-D this replaces the analog R G B signals with digital versions for better noise immunity.
DVI-I which is a connector with the DVI-A and the DVI-D pins all in one connector.
