It has to be recharged everytime I use it. Any ideas why and how to fix it? I'm not sure about the model but it's a manual transmision. Does it have an alternator or something? I put a brand new battery on it and it still has to be charged everytime.

Something is running the battey down like a short. If the JD is like other lawn tractors it uses no electricity from the battery other than for starting or the headlights. Try this, with the battery charged, and the engine/ignition switch off, disconnect the ground cable from the battery. Watch for a spark when you remove the cable. If there is a spark, something is drawing current from the battery. On my sears mower, if I leave the ignition switch in the run position, there is power to a small soleniod at the base of the carburetor. Over a couple of days it will run the battery down.

Your question could be read two ways. Does it discharge during or between uses. Prior respondents both have good responses. I would add that a voltage check of the battery, taken while the engine is off and then while it is running. If the Voltage is not 1-3 volts greater while the engine is running, the alternator is not functioning.

first go to the auto parts store and buy a battery hydrometer it measures the specific gravity of each cell that will tell you of your battery condition
if it's not the battery then get a multi meter and with your tractor ruining check your voltage output at full throttle you shoul be puting out 13 - 15 volts take note you need full throttle for the generator to work the hydrometer should cost no more than $5 the multi meter you can pick up for about $15

A quick internet search comes back with many places selling John Deere alternators, so I think it is a good bet that there is one and it certainly sounds like it isn't working.
If you're mechanically inclined, I'm sure you could contact one of these places, order one and replace it yourself. Otherwise, you should contact your dealer.
