The city was incorporate 249 years ago, and for some odd reason the Penguins are wearing a patch to celebrate the 250th Anniversary which isn't until Nov of 2008(which is during hockey season).

If you're talking about the Steelers, they became the "Steelers" in 1940, after coming on board as the Pirates in 1933.
They twice merged with other teams during WWII, first with the Eagles and then with the Cardinals, before becoming simply the Steelers again in 1945.
