You have to go a long way from Sydney to get to the outback. You have to go through the country before you get to the bush and there's a lot of country out there. Get a map of NSW. Draw a line from Bourke to Mildura. Anything northwest of that line is pretty much outback. The further northwest you go, the wilder it becomes.

Hi the accessible outback is a town called Broken Hill ,yep red and wild if ya in the wrong pub @ the wrong time lol but seriously nothing is short on an island like Australia.Country Link run a great train service out to Broken Hill and return from Sydney and the links below will you a good start for what your looking for.

I guess you have a long way to go from Sydney to see the red and typical Outback. but you can see it in NSW :)

Just go back o'Bourke. The Darling river run, is a great track down the river from Bourke to Wentworth. You'll see a lot of red dust there. Kinchega National Park has an historic wool shed with lots of old photos and displays about the shearing.
