It's because white people have to be politically correct, & get in trouble when they say offensive things about minorities.

I believe, as you know, it's because usually in the past when a white person said that word to a black person there was some terrible reality/ act wiating to happen in the next second, minute or hour. It is a word that was used during the era of slavery in the United States and by which many lost their lives and suffered because of being identified by that same word. It is still difficult for a white person to say that word jokingly, playfully like someone else would claim to do. There are people that joke about painful events while others would like painful events to be laid to rest. I personally believe that something that is not talked about or made jokes about is automatically magnified/made even larger (sort of like a taboo sbject, it's always there however much we may avoid talking about it). Maybe some blacks call themselves the word to down play it, while to many others it is a reminder of something painful that would be better forgotten. But not talking about it does not necessarily mean it will be forgotten. There's a dilemma.
Maybe the time is not ripe for a white person to joke about the word in the same manner as someone else would.

That's a lie. I hate to hear Spanish people using that word. First of all - look at the origination of the word. During slavery, this was not a nice thing to be called and to so casually use it today is hypocrisy. I don't feel any one should use the word, it should be stricken from the English language. Spanish people have adopted the style and culture of black people so they use it to fit in. I think it is stupid. It's like calling someone a **** in my eyes. Both words should be omitted from the dictionary and people that use the word need to research slavery and see what white people attached to the word and maybe people won't be so quick to let it roll off their tongue like that. REALITY CHECK!

I'm a black guy. Over the years of growing up I have used it. As I have became a man I realize I don't care for the use of it. I don't use it and I don't allow anyone to call me that. No matter what their race is.
Just like the people call their partner "boo" and other borderline endearment words like that. I refuse to call my lady that. If I call her anything outside her name I will call her "Love".

I don't think its okay for ANYONE to call someone that or any other racist name, and I know plenty of black people who WOULD be offended by being called that, no matter who it was saying it. Don't stereotype that way.

Well, in East Oakland, where I grew up, it was never acceptable for any other race to use that term, I don't know where you are living and maybe times have changed, but here we don't do that.

I think the word itself should be banned from everyone's vocabulary. It's meaning supposedly means "ignorant" and I don't care how it's spelled I would not want anyone calling me that.
Plus, gender/race specific words like that annoy me because I'm white and therefore get discriminated against for using any of them, even if I'm telling a joke.
for the record, racists jokes can be funny...I'M NOT RACIST FOR LAUGHING AT A RACIST JOKE.
What do you call 10,000 white people running down a hill?
AVALANCHE!
