Why should it be illegal to sell something that is legal to give away?

Okay, pick your battle. You make two different arguments here. Your main title question is whether women should be allowed to 'sell her body'. In effect, tossing aside puritan attitudes, a prostitute is merely selling her time and labor. How is that different than a manual laborer? In truth, it's not. Service for moeny, just as most of us provide for our employers. Logically there is no rational basis for prostitution bans. Now, you also make an argument equating prostitution with dating. There I find little to support your claim. Dating is a mutual give and take with no guarantee of the outcome, and not specific quid pro quo. Not the same as a financial transaction at all.

There's A HUGE Difference Between Prostitution &nd Dating. You DATE The Person, Get To Know Them, Then You Have Sex. Prostitution Is Where You're Out On The Streets Getting PAID For Sex... So There Is A Difference.

Hmmm . . . there are health concerns, which I understand Nevada addresses somehow.
I'm also wondering if people willing to make prostitution legal would also feel comfortable WITHOUT and exception for this type of employment in the context of unemployment insurance, student "work-study" programs, or "workfare." If one is comfortable with making it legal, and also comfortable with work requirements for government assistance profgrams, then one should be comfortable with no exception for this kind of work. Or if they are, then maybe that discomfort is telling. (Then again, stripping is legal now, and I don't know of any exceptions for it.)
I think that to make secual intercourse (or similar acts) a commodity is to severely devalue and misunderstand the nature of human sexuality and intimacy. Then again, that ship has long since sailed, and I also have a problem with the state "saving people from themselves." (Or are the people, acting through their representatives, working to keep society healthy - in more ways than one?)
As with many tough issues, I have many questions and few answers.
I don't have a problem with anti-prostitution laws. There are many things people "can't do with their body." Like go nude in public, or have sex in the street. Maybe I'm a prude! :)

Whether something is a good idea or not and whether something should be illegal are two different questions. I think that those countries that do allow and regulate prostitution have fewer problems with it than those who do not. Prostitution in this country is associated with illegal drug use and it is done on the streets. Taking it off the streets and regulating it is something we should at least consider. By not doing so we are making criminals out of individuals who otherwise could be law abiding, taxpaying citizens.
Kenneth C. I think there are a lot of screwed up women out there in the dating world too LOL.

If a person allegedly has the right to do to their own body what they want, then that certainly means that prostitution would have to equally be supported.
As would euthenasia and drug use and selling of body parts.
Logically, they all stem from the same argument.
I would argue, too, that if minors are allowed to get abortions without parental / guardian notification, then logically they should also be allowed to buy alcohol and tobacco, since it's "wrong" to prevent them from doing what they want to their bodies.

My friend once said that being married is legalized prostitution - I don't know if I agree. But I do agree with your comment about cutting out all the "chase". I guess if someone is willing to have sex for money and someone else is willing to pay then what business is it of mine?

Actually, I believe that prostitution should be legalized, but regulated. What a person does with his/her own body is his/her own business. Not only that, but there will always be prostitution, so it's pointless to make it illegal. The 1920s should have taught us that prohibition doesn't work.

Well, in my career of law enforcement, every prostitute I've come across has been very screwed up emotionally. So I don't think it is a the same as dating at all.
However, I don't mind prostitution in Nevada and how Europe does it. Heavily regulated, lots of testing. Still lots of screwed up women doing it. But you don't have disease concerns and you are getting tax money from it.

The problem with prostitution besides the moral issue is that of the spread of disease. If it were legalized and they were tested regularly, it would be much better for all concerned.
