I lost the installation cd for the router and forgot the password. Is there any way to reset the router so I can make a new password? I'm really lost in this whole way of securing a network. Would it be easier to just buy a new router? But would I still have to uninstall the old router software? HELP!!!

First let's start with you do not need the Installation CD.
Many Router Manufactures add this CD to eliminate you having to enter some of the settings manually. Most require you to pull the plug or insert a small pin in the reset hole to reset the router to originanl Default settings.
Open your Browser, and type in 192.168.1.1 this is the Router Utility the passworf will either be admin or public. to be sure you need to refer to the paperwork that came with the router.
Each manufacture can very a little different, but unplugging the router normally resets the settings.
Once you type in the number provided will access you to the Utility page and you can choose Security and depending on how old or new your router and computer are will determine the type of security you can activate.
WEP
WPA
WPA-2
The WPA-2 is of course the best. Your router will give you choices.

You should be able to go the the Router manufacturers website and put in the model # and download a PDF of the book. As for resetting the router, like a CD tray, there is usually a pin hole on the bottom or somewhere that will allow you to reset the router. I would first get the documentation to get the correct steps.

Once you have the router reset and your computer recognizes it, you can then proceed with security. Every router is different, but to name a few security types you have WEP and WPA. Where you can assign a certain key that will need to be put in place for wireless users. You can also set it so that any hard wired computer is identified via the router. Hope that helps, but with out knowledge of the type of router, model # or serial, there aint much more I can say.
Good luck!

There is no need to buy a new router - you would have to configure it and this takes as much work as configuring the existing one.

Go to the maker's web site and download the manual for the specific router. It will tell you how to reset the router to factory default and how to install and invoke security. I would also download the latest firmware they have for the router and upgrade the router firmware as well.

First upgrade firmware then configure for security. Follow the manual's directions for this.

Take good notes on this and all will work.

Never try to configure the router via a wireless link, instead use a wired link to the router to configure (and to upload firmware).

Most consumer routers have a reset button, it's usually recessed and you'll have to push it in with a paper clip and hold it for several seconds. You should see the LEDs change on the front when it has reset to defaults. You can then log in with the default password. Just check the manufacturer's website for the model you have on how to reset to manufacturer defaults.
