Mental/emotional pain can, and usually does, fade with time or meds. Physical pain only gets worse with time, and wears you down emotionally and mentally....chronic pain is horrible to live with.... and the meds to relieve it knock you for a loop, so much so that you have little mental capacity while they are effective.....and we become tolerant to these meds, so it takes more and more to be effective. PHYSICAL pain is far worse to deal with as we age...it changes our personalities into crabs! When you meet a grouchy person, trust they have reached their limit on pain....it can occupy all parts of the brain ...no thanks...I deal with enough of it as it is. And, I believe the only people qualified to answer this question are those who live with chronic pain...the abstract is a very different animal than the real! I also believe that Sage Seeker has some very valid points. The memory of pain is something that fades, cannot be relived. But this does not apply to chronic pain. When someone awakens in the morning and knows this is the best they will feel all day, it just breaks one down over time. Love and peace, Goldwing

Pain and pain tolerance are relative. It all depends on the individual. If you have had no pain in one of these categories, the slightest aggravation may be intolerable. They say woman have more tolerance, which is related to the fact that we bear the pain of childbirth, and after than anyone complaining of a hangnail gets no sympathy from me. I view the world and the population experiencing daily death and destruction, and so my tiny little emotional crises are relatively nil. The salvaging thing about mental illness or pain is that most people are not aware they have it, just look at the nut next to you and you will know what I mean. Some of the happiest people in the world are those "suffering" from mental illness, or other mental incapacities. Sometimes I envy their delight in small things and their ability to love without condition.

My guess would be either mental or emotional pain would be worse. Physical pain can usually be taken care of with medication. And yes, my doctors tell me that women usually have a higher tolerance for pain than men.

Mental and emotional pain are so far removed from physical pain that I don't believe they can be compared. Yes they do have an effect on each other if we allow it, but the effect is more stress than pain. I live with chronic pain do to the deterioration of my nervous system. I take numerous pain pills for it but nothing touches it so I live with it. I choose to live with it as normally as possible, without letting it effect me either mentally or emotionally. I just accept it. Mental and emotional pain are dealt with on a totally different level and do not have to stay with a person forever. Forgiveness is the key, whether it is to forgive another or to forgive ourselves. Once we have truly forgiven, the pain goes away. So which is worse? Who's to say. We each create our own hell, or we choose to be below all things and be at peace.

Emotional pain is the worse for me !!!!! I don't know if some people have a higher tolerance for pain as much as handling it better. Having a lot of support makes you stronger than someone who had little or none !!! Good question !! It has really got me thinking !!!!! Yes, it does smell like burnt tires in here right now !!! *smile*

I hope others suffering with fibromyalgia answer this question. It is a physical pain that very often mixes with depression from fighting the pain. The meds help but the chronic pain is always there and your muscles are often tense from the fight. Add in life and loss of loved ones and fibro is a physical, mental and emotional roller coaster. I personally am having the best year in 13 years. It has taken 3 years of getting meds adjusted and the lack of rain this hurricane season helped. Unless you are in the throes of pain like this it is not understandable.

I am really tolerant to emotional and mental pain. I have never felt that kind of pain because I always try to stay positive. I think physical pain is worse because you can't prevent it. With emotional and physical pain you can just not let it effect you which comes easy to me. I think physical pain is definitely worse and that different pains effect people differently.

For me, pain is pain and it is all relative. yes, childlbirth was perhaps the most pain I believed I would ever have; however, when I had an absessed wisdom tooth and the infection spread up a facial nerve, I said that was the worst pain I had ever had and could barely stand. Then my Dad died and that loss struck me in the core of my being...there are so many types of pain and for each one of us the effect and intensity may differ.

If I just HAD to pick one type of pain I would say the pain of helplessness/hopelessness...which could be born of physical, mental or emotional causes.

Personally I think emotional pain.

I can handle a high physical pain but emotional pain just rips your heart out. That kind of pain is very difficult to deal with.

Mental pain like stress and anxiety I have learnt to deal with in various ways as I ve gotten older and more experienced.

Everyone is an individual and reacts accordingly. What I find painful you might not and vice versa.

They are all interrelated, depression and mental pain can be felt as a physical pain, and physical pain can cause mental and emotional pain, emotional pain as in heartache can be felt very much as physical pain, and can cause physical symptoms. Pain is pain and can come under many headings. Some people have a much lower threshold to pain than others.
