The Fair Tax is a NON-PARTISAN issue.
Let me explain the reasons for each side to support the Fair Tax.
Liberals;
1. There is Better Tax Relief for the Poor, Low and Fixed Invome persons. The Prebate totally eliminates any federal tax below the poverty level for the household. Those families at twice the poverty level would have an effective tax rate of less than 11.5%
2. It provides a direct incentive to improve Low Income neighborhoods. Since there is no tax on used homes, low income families can buy used homes and refurbish them at a much lower cost than buying new homes.
3. It will be better for the Environment. American will again learn to appreciate the value of durable high quality goods. It will be less costly to repair and recycle items than the current " throw away" products currently being produced.
4. The Fair Tax promotes Social Equaltiy. All Americans are treated exactly the same. The wealthy no longer will be able to take advantage of tax loopholes to avoid paying taxes.
5. It reduces Political Corruption & Corporate Lobbying. The elimination of the Income Tax system effects 53% of the 35,000 lobbyists in D C. There will be no loopholes in the Fair Tax (as written) and no exemptions. The politicians will lose their "corporate supporters" and will be more answerable to the voters in their District.
6. The Fair Tax will improve Political Productivity. The revenue issues of the Income Tax changes (over 14,000 since 1986) will be eliminated providing more time for the Congress to solve the real issues of government. There will be no Social Engineering or Class Warfare that currently exists.
Conservatives;
1. Provides more Privacy in Personal and Financial Affairs. There are no Income Tax reports to file. The government no longer needs to know where you work, what your income level is, what you do with your money or how you spend your money.
2. It promotes Family Values. There is no longer a marriage penalty. There is no incentive to retain custody of the children in divorce cases, so these issues will be dependent upon the best interests of the family.
3. It promotes Personal Liberties. The IRS is currently exempt from provisions of the 4th ammendment. The individual rights to illegal search and seizures will be protected.
4. It empowers Private Business. The elimination of tax on businesses will allow the private business to grow, invest and improve their product without being concerned about the tax effects of these activities.
Following the re-election of President Bush, the Democratic Leadership sent a letter to the President (dated 12/15/2004) experssing their position on tax reform. The letter indicated wanted him to "act now so that tax reform can move us toward a system that is more fair, less complex, and that adequately funds the budget without perennial deficits"
They wanted: Fairness, Simplification, and Fiscal Responsilility.
It was signed by;
Nancy Pelosi, Democratic Leader
Steny H. Hoyer, Democratic Whip
Robert Menendez, Democratic Caucus Chairman
Charles B. Rangel, Ranking Member, Committee on Ways and Means
John M. Spratt, Jr., Ranking Member, House Budget Committee
George Miller, Ranking Member, Committee on Education and the Workforce
Rosa L. DeLauro, Co-Chair Steering and Policy
The Fair Tax fulfills all the items these individual wanted. So, why do they now oppose the Fair Tax?
The Fair Tax will be the greatest shift in POWER and CONTROL from politicians to the American People in over 200 years! They will lose their POWER and CONTROL.
The American people will determine how much tax they will pay based on HOW and WHEN they spend their money.

If you're talking about a uniform flat income tax rate - neither of the major parties support it.
It can be demonstrated to be a BIG increase on the lower and middle incomes - and is something of a untouchable topic.
The Republicans try to whittle away at the progressive nature of our tax structure a little bit at a time.
Since it has been set up, the progressive rate has been sliding downward at a fast clip.

If you mean a straight across the board income tax, it'll never happen. That would mean that everyone who gets a paycheck of any kind would have to pay. That would cost the politicians special interest group's votes.

If the "Fair Tax" plan were in place, a loaf of bread would cost you something like 20 dollars.
I think it's unfair that anyone making under $180,000 per year pays taxes on every dollar they earn, while at the same time a person who makes $300,000,000 per year only pays taxes on $180,000 of it. They should have to pay taxes on every dollar they earn just like everybody else. That would be fair in my opinion.
