You're preaching to the choir on that one for me. One of my pet peeves is stupid kid's names. I think parents feel like the need to be "creative" but all they do is give their kids ugly names that no one can spell or pronounce and then the parents get are bent out of shape when someone does mispronounce it. Usually when I see a goofy name, I just assume that the parent is either white trash or a pretentious idiot. "Creative" doesn't exactly spring to mind when I see names like Karisma, Chantz, or Zakary. I really wish parents would choose unusual "real" names instead of these weird made up ones.

By the way, regarding your user name...if I asked you how to sell the 3" lengths of string I inherited, would that ring a bell?
The Now string...ready cut...as used in hospitals! LOL!!

I wouldn't name my child a long name like that with all the random apostrophes, but I absolutely hate old fashioned names for kids b/c they are BORING. Y should a child have the same names as a 50+ year old person (unless it's someone special)??? I like names that sound cute for kids when they're kids & at the same time, sound serious & mature when they're adults.

I'm all for strange spellings and weird names for NICK NAMES! I mean Come on...I use Rayven Fairmoon!

But real first names should be something to be proud of....something strong and that can be used as an adult without being looked on as a dork for having strange parents. As I said in another answer...sending your child to school with a t-shirt that says "Mock me till I cry" would be kinder than some of the names these days!

For real though, My name is Natalie Rose...and while when I was younger "Natalie" was relatively unheard of, it has become more popular and well respected.

My strange and "Trendy" name for myself....Ani Teal or Aelan'Ti. Both are anagrams of Natalie :)

Have a great day everyone!

I think parents are trying to be "creative" and make their kids stand out. I hate names like that. I also hate names where a 'z' is randomly used instead of an 's'. I think the name Jasmine is very pretty, but Jazmin looks stupid. I hear a lot about how I spelled my daughter's name (Aleksandra), but it is the Polish spelling of the name and my family is Polish. I didn't make it up, it's pronounced exactly the same as with an 'x' (the 'ks' makes up for the 'x' sound) and I like it. Sometimes people think I made it up to be creative.

Unfortunately people think they must take a name and make it their own and it usually looks very odd to others. I understand being really creative with art projects but your child's name needs to stand the test of time and be something your child will be proud of in the future. What seems cute now won't be in 10 years. Names I liked 5 years ago I wouldn't consider now so I definitely don't want to pick anything to bizarre.

We definitely have a rule in my family where you should only name your kid something they can be president with. Unfortunately, my brother's first wife though it would be a good idea to name their first daughter December. The kid wasn't even BORN in December. Now she's 14, gets mocked relentlessly by her peers, and hates her name. And, there will never be a president December.

There's unique... and then there's cruel.

I personally like old-fashioned names, but I know they aren't for everyone. However, I can't stand names like Mo'Shauwnnduayh or what-have-you. Modern names like Jazlyn and Zaiden aren't my cup of tea, but still 1000x better than random noises written down as confusingly as possible.

I know a lot of people defend names like D'ktoy'na because they are usually minorities, and trying to set their children apart from the white majority. That's how names like Samantha and Jamal came into popular use. I personally don't care for modern made up names, but it is a parent's choice.

mostly it's ignorance and a lack of true creativity, naming their children crappy names is literally their only creative contribution to this world.

a friend who is a teacher actually got griped out by a parent because she wasn't pronouncing a kids name right... she was pronouncing it exactly as it was spelled but the mom said it was pronounced differently.
i think the name was demarcus but the mom said it should be pronounced "demarius"

dumb dumb dumb.

I think that everyone has their own option about Quote on Quote GHETTO NAMES. Yes I do understand that they sound funny but does that mean that you aren't proper or qualified for the job because of your name. I think everyone in this blog is Racist mainly because you pass judgment on someone because of their name. I bet you all think it's cute for stars "white people" to name their kids Poppy Honey and Moon unit now that's GHETTO

Whenever I think of baby names for my future children, I picture them growing up and being a lawyer. Would you want to hire a lawyer named D'ktoy'na? I sure wouldn't. Unprofessional. =P

I wish these parents would think into their children's futures a little more.
