It depends on the type of router. usually $30 to $100 dollars. Wireless is on the higher side of that range. If you go wireless, you will need a wireless adaptor for your desktop computer or a wireless card in your laptop.

A router is used to create a home network of computers. In other words, it allows you to connect more than 1 computer to a single internet connection.

Some routers also come with built in firewalls to help protect you from computer viruses.

Router covers a lot of different types of box...

There are cheap DSL modem/router boxes that go for around £50/$100 (eg dlink, linksys) - but you may find them at less than half that price. Gives you basic broadband connection for wired-in PCs.

There are not so cheap DSL modem/router boxes with built in wifi that cost maybe twice that. Gives you broadband connection for wired and wireless PCs.

There are routers used for businesses that route traffic between a number of ethernet networks... and these cost from hundreds up to thousands (and maybe tens of thousands) of £/$ depending on their speed, number of ports, managability etc. Cisco make this sort of kit along with other reputable manufacturers. These give you the ability to build big complex network infrastructures for companies.

Then of course there are the ones designed for cutting wood made by Black and Decker or Bosch or Elu... they cost around £20-200 and are useless for networking (there is nowhere to plug in the cables) but very good at making noise and dust. Benefits are they are faster than a chisel... or a fancy plane.

I will give you a price range in US $. They range from $60 to well over $250,000 depending upon their level of sophistication and capability.

You probably need a gateway router. These run from $60 to $850 depending upon their degree of sophistication.

You need a router if you have 2 or more pcs that you wish to use to share a common Internet connection.
