my son was 5 months old on oct. 4. hes seems to be developing normally - hes up on his hands and knees rocking back and forth, trying to crawl. he just started cereal and hes somewhat social. hes always been a quiet baby, somewhat serious. he doesnt smile for strangers often. my concern is that he doesnt put much in his mouth. he can easily grab things and manipulate them from hand to hand, and he occasionally puts something new in his mouth but he mostly just feels it with his fingers. he doesnt have an appt with his dr for almost another month, but im wondering if its something i should talk to him before that. hes even teething, but when hes in pain, even then usually its just his fingers. im kind of worried just because of the fact that hes such a serious baby and i look at my nephew (hes 5 weeks older) and everythings been in his mouth for like 2 months now and he smiles and giggles at everyyyyone.

I would mention it to your Dr. but not be too concerned about it. But in the end, follow your gut instinct. Mother will always know best.
If he otherwise smiles at you and makes eye contact with you and dad, he should be fine. Eye contact should be the most important factor here.
My first was a very serious baby, very reserved and people would look at me and ask, what's wrong with him? He would look away from others, but always look at me and dad. It is a defense mechanics for babies when they are stressed out.Today he is a very outgoing 3 year old but still a bit reserved.
My second is 11 months old and he is the smiler, "talks" and smiles at everyone. Very different personalities.

Every baby is different...So don't compare your child with the next..My daughter is 9 mos old and she is in daycare with an 11 mo old. My daughter has 6 teeth and the other baby has 2, she started getting around faster than the other baby, she even took 3 steps while the other baby took none as of yet...
So its just a matter of time your son is just checking out everything, it sounds as if he is very observant...When he's about 7/8 months old..everything he touhes will be in his mouth!!! Be Patient!!

The baby should be seeing a pediatrician and recieving regular vaccines every couple of months. This is something the parents should discuss with the pediatrician , not to mention the fact that the pediatrician should notice the lack of sound. There could be a structural problem which can be corrected via surgery or there could be an issue with his hearing. The condition needs to be investigated , the sooner the better. It is always better to get early intervention than to try to catch up with the other kids later.

I really can't see not putting things in his mouth as a concern.
However not making eye contact and smiling is a concern. Try to smile at him more and "talk" to him. See if he makes eye contact with you. If he makes eye contact with you, then he is fine -he may just not like strangers.

he sounds like he's doing really well i wouldn't be concerned it's not great to have them put things in there mouth, i recently found a recalled toy for lead paint with chew marks on it that is bad. i'd reatherthem not be doing that. every kid learns different and at different speeds.
