Cricket is killing other sports as people are creating a lot of useless hype about the game.Which is affecting the others sports as well as the cricketer's performance. The cricketers are being pressurised for no rime or reason.Whenever there is a cricket match lets say the twenty20 final which happened recently...there were hardly any people on the roads.people took a leave from offices, children from their classes. Why?to watch the final.don't u think that's a bit too much.i mean..its fine if u give cricket importance but not so much that it becomes a matter of life n death for the cricketers.Besides,Indian team wins a cricket match and the whole of India comes to know about it.But if an Indian team wins a Football or Hockey match no one will even come to know about it..There are so many such incidents that have occur ed.But there's one good side to it.Filmmakers have identified this problem and a bringing different games in the limelight...Hope there will be some improvement in the mind set of the people.

It is a misconception that cricket is killing other sports in India. No doubt cricket is more popular and admired than other sports. There is a large following for it, because people enjoy it. Even those who hardly know anything about the game indulge in discussing about the game. A batsman butchering a bowler or a fast bowler uprooting the stumps are all wonderful sights to be watched. Despite this, fielding gives essence to the game and entertains the fans. So it would only be right to give due credit to a sport which really has made the country proud.

Cricket has got more chances for gaining money than any other game in India,a cricketer is worshiped,It was the media which helped cricket to become so famous,Media should focus on spreading the other games than mearly sticking to cricket,If media does so than India can also win many gold medals at the Olympics.

Because cricket is a money minting game in India, Media is mainly focussing in cricket than any other game and there are lot of sponsors for cricket. Hewnce it has become most popular game in India and as such not much attention is given to any other sports.

I'm surprised you're asking. All the money is given to cricket and the players, whether they perform or not, hence young people feel that they should only play cricket to make money. Also, because of lack of funds other sports can't tap or help talent at grassroot levels. Hence cricket is killing other sports.

cricket is popular in India because it is a non contact sport . Majority of Indians do not like contact sports lile football, basketball, hockey, rugby, etc. Indians do not do well in athletics also because their physique does not permit strength, speed and endurance which are primary requisites for these sports. Cricket is a lazy man's game . That's why Indians follow cricket passionately and totally ignore other sports.

A lack of intellectual, deep-thinking people in our surroundings. Schools and colleges in India are forced to teach only Science and Mathematics at the expense of social engineering, communication skills and debate (leading to India's reputation as a land of IT coolies, an image which the government is only too happy to promote as it quells dissent and opposition among the masses)- as a result we don't have too many people with adequate grey matter to comprehend that consolidating all the power and MONEY that our nation throws up ($1 billion to be precise) to a handful of self-serving people (BCCI and the cricket bookies) is only going to make them arrogant, self-conceited and apathetic to the high aspirations the public gives them everytime. The media (TV channels especially) feeds on this "insanity frenzy" and renders demi-God status to our overrated cricketers. The arrogant cricketers don't think twice before playing with the sentiments of so many brainless idiots who had nursed high hopes with them.
Less than 20 years back, India was a highly successful team in hockey and even football, where it was ranked among Top 60. Athletes like PT Usha were considered national icons for their achievement in Olympics and could have become inspiration for so many young athletes in the country (like China with a huge population, India can do as better in promoting the best athletes from all walks of life).
There is nothing called sports culture in India anymore. Commercialisation has killed it - the total government funding in promotion of sports in India, the total budget of the sports ministry does not exceed Rs. 50 crore (less than 0.0001% of our GDP) - even that money is spent in maintaining existing sports facilities and paying the salaries of staff and players. The players at a domestic and regional level come from working class background and have families to take care of - obviously, when there is not much incentive in their growth potential they have nothing much to look into in aspiring to "perform better consistently" - you can't expect them to go much far ahead. As a result, the crop that we send to Olympic events and World Championships are a disappointing lot -how many gold medals did India win in the Olympic events since 1980? None! In a nation of 1.1 billion people - an Aussie called Gilchrist once remarked here in Yahoo Answers that India is the most useless sporting nation- is there anyway we can refute that statement. And no, I'm not even blaming anybody. Only if I had the means to become a sports mentor at a high level, I would have worked tirelessly to change this situation. A "confident sporting nation" renders a more positive image of any country- it does not lie in "India Shining", "Incredible India" and "Vibrant Gujarat".
Even at the Domestic Cricket circuit, state level cricketers don't have much to look forward to in their careers. It is entirely possible to shift the $1 billion money (and growing) on which the BCCI profits itself, and use it for the development of domestic circuit cricket in India (and other sports). But that requires adequate willpower and desire - more and more people should boycott cricket and write to their local sports bodies that they want to watch other events that promote domestic athletes, and a thriving sports culture in India.
