Why are GM( &others)hourly workers with 35-45 years on the job working 7 days 12 hour shifts a week.

Good question. There are institutional constraints that make many workers work more than they would like, while others are without work. The pension response may have merit, but usually defined benefit plans look at the last three years of employment to set the pension level. If you think about it from the perspective of the firm, they may well find it cheaper to have existing workers work harder compared to having new workers join the firm (with all the attendant increases in benefits that that would imply.)

it is important to increase earnings for the anticipated pension. Not only at GM all companies.
