Experienced riders will rarely tail gate anyone... I can't imaging a rider who has any regard for his life doing this!
They might assume you will get out of the way!
Tailgating is a problem with arrogant people driving any type of vehicle now days... I just hate it!

As in every aspect of life, there are some who push the limits and some who don't.
I have seen bikers tailgate frequently (and even tailgate other bikes without staggering).
And, as the first answerer mentioned, being tailgated by an auto makes any biker nervous (or should make them nervous).
Leaving plenty of room in front gives a biker so many more options in case of emergencies. Of course the obvious leeway in case the cager ahead suddenly stops, and the improved visibility to oncoming vehicles. But also you have some room to manoeuver in the event a vehicle behind you doesn't stop (and that's another reason you should never shift to neutral while at a stop).
A good biker can utilise a minimal amount of space to avert a disaster.

I myself don't tailgate, on either 2 wheels or in 4 wheels.
I DO get p*ssed when someone tailgates me, though.
However, most bikes CAN stop in a shorter distance than a car.
BTW, another reason NOT to tailgate while on a bike is you can't see what road surface is coming up ahead if you're too close to the vehicle in front of you. Riding a rigid frame like I do, I pay careful attention to the road surface ahead of me.

The distance that might be tailgating in a car is not on a bike.
Bikes weight 5-700 lbs and have 3 disc brakes and stop very well. Cars weigh 5 or more time that and require 5 times the distance to brake.
If a car is tailgating a bike and has to stop suddenly that bike is probably going to get hit. A bike following a car at the same distance will have no problems stopping.

Some do, some don't.
There are jerks in every class.
As was mentioned above, bikes stop quicker.
Aside from all that, good riders don't tailgate.
I leave the same room I used to in the car. The problem with that is there is always some idiot in a car that thinks that room is for THEM.
As far as being tailgated, just think about it for a second. How safe do you think we are without a bumper, airbags, and crumple zones? All the while being followed by a ton or more of metal that takes twice as far to stop as we do?

a sane rider definately wouldnt tailgate a car. that would be tantamount to being suicidal. maybe they're getting too complacent, and think they will have quick enough reflexes to shotgun the brakes and not hit them. i say this is foolhardy; if u lock up the front wheel, the odds are very high the bike will toss u over the handlebars.
on the other side of the coin, bikes can stop in less distance than a car, and if the driver isnt on the beam, this tailgater is gonna have a very expensive hood ornament.......U.

Tailgating cars in front of you is the best way to get killed.
Say you are following closely and a car coming from the opposite direction wants to turn, he will do so immediately after the car clears him NOT SEEING the motorcycle that was following too closely, resulting in broadsiding the motoercycle.
We have had several killedin our area doing that!

I don't know any biker that tailgate. They just don't have the patients to follow when they can easily pass other cars.
As to BEING tailgated, unlike cars, even if were to just tap their rear ends they are going down. Not only that in that situation they are going UNDER the car that rear ended them. It is CERTAIN death sentence.
Most car drivers don't understand the difference between cars and motorcycle. Blame it on poor drivers ed.
Good Luck and drive safely.
P.S. It is sad (and even mean) but I use to know few riders who would carry 1 inch ball bearing (or huge nuts or bolts) and if they (rider) felt the car behind are being overy agressive would drop the ball bearing - causing great damage to the car behind. But this was in the 80's in NYC when people were much more nasty.

I don't know where some of you are from, but if you haven't seen bikers riding the **** of cars in front of them, you don't get out much!
Yes - it's stupid behavior, and bad riding... but I see it all the time.
Personally - I always make sure I have room to manuever in case someone comes plowing up behind, or the car in front stops suddenly. It should come as common sense to motorcyclists, but sometimes this kind of sense isn't too common.
And yeah - when people tailgate me - I get REAL irate. It is, afterall, my life on the line, and I don't take kindly to people jeapordizing it in order to gain a few inches of ground in rush hour traffic.

only newbies, and idiots tailgate while riding a motorcycle. Not only can they smack into the vehicle ahead of them if it stops quickly, but oncoming traffic can't see the motorcycle that close behind a bigger vehicle and sometimes turn left right into the bike. Not a good outcome either way!!
