Ok so i have read recently that you should not eat peanuts or peanut butter while pregnant or nursing to help prevent a peanut allergy, BUT how about other nuts? Or other nut butters? I do love a good PB&J sandwich every now and then so I was wondering if I should get a jar of almond or cashew butter instead. Any insight?

OK i didnt realize that other people had not heard of this when I asked. Yes, there is NO absolute certainty to this issue but I have read MORE then one article/book that suggests that eating peanuts or peanut butter while pregnant or nursing CAN lead to peanut allergy, and that having even hay fever allergies is considered a history of allergies. In fact one article mentioned that at some point eating peanuts while pregnant may be as taboo as smoking or drinking booze!! That being said, I do have terrible seasonal allergies and since there have been SOME studies showing this peanut allergy correlation to be true, I say better to be safe then sorry. But obviously everyone should do their own thing and talk to their doctor.

I heard this about peanuts also, however on television this morning (in uk) they was a doctor saying that new studies show that there is NO DANGER in eating peanuts whilst pregnant, there is no evidence that eating peanuts will give your child a peanut allergy, and when you think about it really it is kinda silly and doesnt really make sense.
The House of Lords has actually published a paper which states that avoiding peanuts may actually contribute to the allergy, as the child develops no immunity (which makes sense).
Of course this is a brand new report, and like much of the other advice which is given during pregnancy it changes all the time, so I guess more research has to be done either way. I really wouldnt worry about it too much, and I really think eating peanut butter as well as other nuts is fine. However I am not a doctor. I would just read both sides of the argument and make an informed decision. Take a look at this article below or go to google and type in 'house of lords peanut allergy' for more articles. Hope this helps!!

I too read something or heard something about this. Personally I find it to be load of garbage. I would think if anything, you should eat nuts to possibly prevent an allergy. And like a previous person said, if it were so bad, then why would WIC give you a messload of the stuff? I don't know. I absolute LOVE peanut butter. I haven't had much during this pregnancy, but I've had my fair share. All I can do is hope my child doesn't have an allergy. I didn't realize how common it's becoming now. I think the medical industry needs to focus on finding a concrete reason and spend less time trying to scare the crap out of pregnant women!!

The only time they suggest not eating peanuts is if you have a family history of severe allergy problems. Yes peanuts are the only nuts but if you are not going to eat peanuts you need to make sure not to eat anything containing peanuts and do the same while you are breast feeding as well.
Personally I think it's a bunch of BS. They used to tell women to get rid of there pets while pregnant and for the first several years of having small children because of allergies. It now turns out that children with animals in the house are less likely to have allergies and have stronger immune systems.
Personally I have a huge aversion to meat while pregnant and peanut butter is one of my protein sources. Without it I would have a very hard time getting enough protein.

You can eat peanuts and peanut butter in pregnancy. There has been at least one study done, but the results were far from conclusive. A lot of the babies who developed peanut allergies in one study in particular had moms who reported eating peanut butter in pregnancy, but they have not linked that as a cause. A lot of moms eat peanut butter in pregnancy, and have non-allergic babies.
Family history of severe allergies is a much better indicator of risk in this case.
Ask your doctor's opinion before making your decision. My OB does not consider that to be a risk, and she's very cautious about a lot of things.
See the attached link for further info.

I think you might be confused on a pregnant woman eating peanuts/peanut butter with the ideals of feeding peanuts/peanut butter to a toddler. I know that you are not suppose to feed such items to a small toddler due to the chances of them getting an allergy for that along with strawberries and also they cannot have honey too.
My doctor encouraged me to eat peanuts for the protein when I started to get light-headed and dizzy and they make for a great carrying snack.

i was actually encouraged to eat peanuts & pb to increase my protein intake... along with all the other nuts. *i've* read that there is no actually correlation between eating peanuts & having a peanut allergy, it's all supposition. it may be from the idea that you shouldn't give infants peanuts *just in case* they DO have an allergy to them.
it (not eating peanuts to avoid giving the baby peanut allergies) seems counterintuitive to me, i have many allergies & from what i know, being exposed to something a lot creates a tolerance... (like allergy shots where they inject you with your allergen in order to get your body used to it & not respond in an allergic reaction--they really work! and the benefits are passed to the baby in utero so they won't be so allergic)

My GP told me that the only reason pregnant women should not eat peanuts is if there is a family history of allergy.
Other than that, there is absolutely no reason why you can't eat peanuts!!!
