I still read them mainly here on the net, but just take things with a pinch of salt. I do believe SOME of what is coming out of Portugal, however.
As for the Papps, the way they behave is indeed sick, and the decent papers should stop buying the $hit they take, to stop them making a living from it.
But the papers sell more with a salacious headline, especially with an accompanying picture. Wonder why?

Some of the press are okay, it's only the paparazzi types that annoy me.
There are some honest people out there and it is important that we still keep up to date with what's going on in the world... if it wasn't for the press/media we wouldn't know what was going on in the next town ahead let alone the whole situation in Burma.
There are however many journalists who are only out to make some money... paparazzi who hound celebrities until they end up killing them... You only have to hear how much they whine about some celebrity accidentally hitting them with their car as they run infront of them to know that the whole system is unjust...
We just need to make sure we only read the creditable newspapers

The public gets what the public wants.
Does the media create the public`s appetite for reading drivel and crap or does the public`s demand for it produce the media coverage that we get thus driving the media to behave a certain way?
If the public didn`t lap up sensationalist stories we wouldn`t see them. Too easy to blame just the media. It is a reflection of society so to society we must look.

Yes the press in general are first class fools. They say its all in the public interest to hound people, etc. What rubbish.
Look at the way they promote twits like drunken , drug taking celebs too. There should be greater restrictions on what the press report & the ways in which it is reported.

The press is important in our life. How will we know what's going on in our world? You're right about people following celebs around. Those aren't the press in a respectful possition, those are tabloids. Investigative journalists who uncover important information (eg: Watergate scandal), those are people to be respected.

I dont think its a shameful proffession - the press also have done a tremendous amount of good. They have highlighted problems I would never have dreamed were going on in the world.
However some of their methods can be completely shameful.

I think many of them are lower than ambulance chasing lawyers. The cause of all this though is all the idiots that buy the crap these dirt balls are writing or snapping photos of. Which is one reason why I try not to pay any attention to any celebrity news ever.

It used to be mostly honorable, but now of course it is completely corrupt as you suggest.
However, with the Internet, you can get your news from a variety of sources, plus do primary research yourself until you come up with information that you believe to be accurate.
For example, each day I prefer to get my news from http://www.drudgereport.com (which often leads to sites like http://www.breitbart.com or http://www.myway.com, which I find to be fairly neutral and accurate [over time you start to get a feel for when they are and when they aren't]),
http://boortz.com/nuze (has a radio show, also refers you to a lot of outside sources, and always says, "don't believe a word I say, check it out for yourself"),
http://www.defamer.com (Hollywood gossip, great fun),
http://www.coasttocoastam.com (sometimes paranormal, which I avoid but a lot of people like, but mostly digs up news from around the world that they discuss on the radio),
and from those sources and the other places to which they refer you, I get a pretty broad picture of what's going on each day.
Hope that's a good start.

Completely Agree.
Its the very epitome of our capitalist society.
Do whatever you can to make money.
I.e. who cares who you step over, humiliate, slander, insult, invade privacy or any other manner of hoprrific acts, as long as it helps you sell papers and make more money!
Sadly, it will only get worse.
