I would sincerely suggest you Google Authorhouse as well as check their listing at Preditors and Editors. You will find that they lost a major lawsuit and are up to the in financial eyeballs in debt. While you are at it, check their previous name First House. Then check with Absolute Write Water Cooler Bewares and Background Checks Forum, Anne Crispin's Site, Writers Wall, Writers Beware and any other Writers Beware sites you can find. You will find Authorhouse listed on all of them. The lawsuits against them are a matter of public record. Pax - C

I hadn't heard of them, but having just looked at their website, they look to me like they're a vanity publisher. They are really just glorified printers. Note this paragraph on their home page: "Choosing AuthorHouse to be your book publisher means you retain all rights, control decisions regarding the design, distribution, promotion, royalty amount and sales of your book."

What this actually means is you will have to do (and pay for) all the work yourself in the distribution and marketing of your book. This is very difficult to do, as retailers can spot a self-published book a mile off.

Some of them are 'print to order'. They don't do actual print runs, but if someone orders your book they print off a copy there and then. The cover price is usually high for the type of book it is. It's a way of being published, and your book might be spotted by a genuine publisher (like the book "Tunnels" by R Gordon and B Williams) but you could easily end up with zero sales (barring friends and family of course). This one looks reasonable to me: http://www.authorsonline.co.uk/

I suggest you find yourself an agent. Get a copy of the Writers and Artists Yearbook in the library; find some agents that are accepting new authors. Spend all the time you would have spent fruitlessly marketing your self-published book in getting professionally published. If your work is good enough, someone will publish it eventually (J K Rowling had rejections!) They will also do all the distribution and marketing for you.

On the other hand, if you just want to produce a few dozen copies of your book for friends and family, then get a quote from a reputable printer.

Author House is a VANITY PRESS, which means the author pays for everything. Traditional publishers do NOT CHARGE the writer. This company is a fraud.
