Some teachers are simply bad teachers. The same way that some doctors and nurses are bad. They have some personal failings so that they resent the difficult cases, and do not have the abilities or interest to deal with this shortcoming in their own self.
I had a math lecturer that called me Mr 40% as that was the mark that I got on my first year at college on his math exam. I got 41% the following year. For the next three years my grades improved with a new math teacher and passed my finals with 98%
The same first lecturer also took the class for social studies and presented us with two IQ tests. The first was one of his own making and I scored very badly on it and when he announced the results he said " and of course Mr. 40% does not know anything about anything..." The second test was a mensa test and when the scoring was added up my score was 140 and he said that I had cheated. Exactly how I cheated I don't know. This guy was just a bully. He did not like me. It never bothered me other than the fact that I would have liked to have been able to reply to his insults in a way that I can do now to people that are ignorant and abusive.
These types of people are not interested in communication and probably don't even like their job. They are bullies and take it out on the weakest person.

They're not trying to be mean, they're trying to get the shy students involved. I used to be a little shy in school as well, but after graduation I realized that in the real world there's no reason for anyone to be shy. The teachers know this and want to try to break their students of it before they go out into the real world and get trampled on.

Not all teachers are.

My History teacher and Maths teacher were both really nice to me. Whether or not that's because they were men...?

But other teachers can be horrible. The one I had when I was 8 used to pick on me ~ I really hated her.

because if you are very shy and quiet that means that you are not open to the class and do not participate accurately enough and they may target you to see if it helps you get more interested or even more social.

Could be one of two things: Either they look down on you because they think you're wimpy and mousey, or they think that you're just putting up a front for them pretending to be shy, but you're really not. Either way, they're wrong.
