The best time to buy a laptop/notebook is when you need it.

The real question is if you need a laptop or notebook, because if you use it exclusively at home, you ought to get a desktop system, which is cheaper and more capable.

With that question settled, you should look for the best you can afford, and don't buy a computer on the first trip to the store, look around and never buy until the second visit. Laptops can be priced differently from store to store, and the prices change almost daily, so keep your eyes open.

Here, our Sunday paper comes with ads from about six computer stores. They feature weekend sales to get you to the store. They have limited numbers, but if you get to the store before it opens, you can meet with success. Thankfully, I did a few months ago.

If you have some time, check out the weekly ads, but be especially alert around holiday time.

Whatever you do, buy one from a company that has been in business for a while and which offers good support. It is as important as the price. Dell and HP come to mind, although I picked up a Toshiba laptop ($399 with a free printer).
