Mythology is not a set of facts to be proven true OR disproven as false.
It is the outgrowth of the collective unconscious manifesting itself in cultural stories. The details may or may not have been historical, but it doesn't matter if they are or not. They only give cultural context to help the conscious mind understand what the subconscious is trying to accomplish.
The subconscious mind does not speak in locig or rationalities - thus, 'facts' are part of the head life and not the heart life.
Myths speak in the same sort of language as dreams.
"Myths are public dreams, dreams are private myths"

~~~~ Bobby ,,,, Please consider that when all these myths were created that there was no such thing as Written Language, therefore No Recording. The only way Mankind was able to keep Information Available was by The Spoken Word. Words are Vocal Symbols of Communication called Language. From this language we created Stories with Symbols that represent Concepts and Ideas. When we apply Human Attributes to these concepts they are called Icons,,, or gods. This is your short Primer on how Mythology Begins and evolves into Religion. Study your mythology and you will see the direct correlation between the developement of Mankind's Conciousness and the evolution of Mythology/Religion throughout history.~~ Namaste`
Myth is a very general term we use, essentially it refers to stories told about various cultures' beliefs that are no longer subscribed to. Most of these stories were invented to explain why the world is the way that it is, i.e. lightening is Zeus getting mad, or cyclopes invented to explain mammoth skulls.
So yes, in a way, they are based in some form of reality.
The stories are all based in reality but they are not true. for example, a thousand years from now cristianity might not be believed so it would become a myth.
mythology is just like God or luck or karma. people like knowing things. when something they cant explain comes along, they make something up for it. "Why are we here?" God was created in the minds of people to answer that question. so mythology is just like any religion, people wanted an explanation, so they made one
