Animals of the phylum Cnidaria. The animal is basically a cup with tentacles. There are two types, soft coral and hard coral. It is the hard variety that make up reefs. Coral are unique because it makes its own skeleton from its secretions.

It is an animal that lives in colonies and builds a structure from calcium carbonate (like limestone) around its body. The combination of all the structures is a coral reef.
