I think it is crazy to encourage drinking in pregnancy.
Just like drugs , alcohol when taken during pregnancy is foetal abuse. Its no different to feeding your live born child drugs or booze. It is abuse of the foetus.

I was told that when I was pregnant - and that was 8 yrs ago! I don't see how this is NEW news. A glass of wine now and then - even weekly is OK during pregnancy. Women have done it for ages.
Fetal alcohol syndrome from my understanding is caused by excessive drinking during pregnancy - especially through the first 2 trimesters.
This being said I am not a drinker - and it seems to me unwise to release this - as there are plenty or irresponsible mothers that will run with it - having 2 large cocktails a week.
A gallon margarita or mile high Long Island Iced tea is not what they are talking about here!

I've always thought that the COMPLETE ban on alcohol for pregnant women was an overreaction. After all, if all it takes is a drink of alcohol to have fetal alcohol syndrome (FES), we'd be up to our eyeballs in kids with FES.
The challenge, of course, is keeping women from crossing the line beyond that one or two units a week. Everyone wants to push the envelope. But assuming they can practice such self-restraint for the sake of the baby, the risk to the baby is minuscule.
The bottom line is if you want to avoid every single possible risk in your pregnancy...or anything else...you pretty much have to wrap yourself in a cocoon and never leave home...and even then there are risks. There are risks everywhere, so you just have to use common sense.

The National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence is made up of trained scientists. Not only that, but I would imagine that there is a HUGE difference between drinking one or two units of alcohol a week and drinking one or two units a day. Moderation is the key!
By the way, I seldom ever drink, but I'm just taking into consideration the findings of trained scientists.

1 or 2 units is very little alcohol. It probably is OK but it seems a little pointless considering that if you drank that much in a week you would have no chance of feeling the effect. I agree that people will probably just see this as an excuse to drink while pregnant but being a moron isn't cureable unfortunately.

That has always been the advice - for at least 8 years!
FAS is extremely rare and happen in cases where the mother drinks excessivly, ie an alcoholic.
I never knew I was pregnant for 8 weeks and I have been out - big style - several times. Obviously once I knew I didn't drink like that but I would have the odd glass of wine. I had champers at my sisters wedding, a shandy now and again and lo and behold - my baby was fine!
My sisters midwife told her not to worry about what she drank - just not to drink to much in case she fell over as that was more likely to harm the baby than the booze. She didn't listen to her though!
Get of your soapbox.

I heard this on GMTV who at least in my opinion took a line of 'it's okay women! The nine months of without a drink torture is over! You can now drink!'
I'm sorry but, is nine months really that long when you're going to be looking after this kid for the next twenty odd years, worse if someone unfortunate happens to their development? To my understanding FAS which is (obviously) caused by alcohol but caused regardless of the amount you consume as no one really knows.
I think common sense answers the question.
Though I'm not a heavy drinker, or even remotely rely on the stuff.

Foetal alcohol syndrome only occurs when the mother drinks heavily.
However I agree. I think its probably best avoided during pregnancy.

What you're talking about is a very small amount of alcohol and they were probably referring to wine. Wine has other properties that are good for the body . . . the alcohol isn't the factor.
Personally, I don't recommend drinking any. Alcohol can deform or kill a child.

The new NICE guidelines actually state that up to a glass a day (1.5 units) is okay for pregnant women. I rather expect that they have heard of FAS and it would have been one of the factors they considered in issuing their guidelines.
Personally I drank a small glass of wine several evenings a week and my baby is absolutely fine. My mother recalls drinking beers in the summer and my grandma (who's now 101) was advised to drink a glass of sherry (for the iron) every day when she was pregnant way back in the 30s

They change their minds on an almost weekly basis about this issue - one unit a week would not cause foetal alcohol sydrome btw.
Infact my mother was 6 months gone before she knew she was pregnant with my sister and had drunk alcohol over that time, my sister was and is fine (now a healthy woman with 2 kids of her own)
