There are plenty of dual purpose bikes on the highways that serve the purpose admirably. And I think they'd make an excellent choice for a starter street bike.
Also, if you plan on riding street exclusively, there are plenty of supermoto-designed factory bikes availalble with street tires, 17" wheels, better brakes, and strong powerplants. Or... you could purchase a regular 4-stroke dirt bike & make the changes yourself.

First of all dirt bikes are not street legal. There are dual purpose dirt/street bikes which are legal, but they wont go as fast as a regular sports bike and the gas mileage sucks. The ninja 250 is a great buy and I am over 6 feet high and can ride a ninja 250 comfortably because of the upright position. It is a very forgiving bike and is the best to learn on.
If you wait few more months Kawa is coming with a new redesigned for the first time in 20 years Ninja 250 which is taller than the current one. Your other choices would be a Ninja 500, Suzuki GS 500, Buell blast, Ninght hawk, Burgman. Good luck.

a dirt bike is great to start on, if you want to ride dirt. The difference between an enduro and a sport bike like a cbr or gsx is more than noticeable. If you want to ride street get a street bike, you'll have a lot more fun and you won't have to re-learn your cornering and stuff when you do sell the dirt bike to go street. And you don't need to start down at 250cc, you'll be bored in a week. I would recommend no smaller than 500, I started on a 750.

WR250F Yamaha for your height and weight, this will be a great bike for you and you will have a blast on it. This bike is very fast, but is built for motocross.A good helmet cost's around 400-600 dollars, boot's cost anywhere from 100-600 dollars, your jersey will cost 20-40 dollars, your pants will cost 80-110 dollarsm gloves will most likely cost 20-40 bucks, socks will cost 15-30 dollars, knee pads will cost 20 bucks at the least, knee braces are real expensive, a chest plate will cost 50-100 dollars, a leatt brace or neck brace (high quality) will cost $400, and googles will be anywhere from 20-120 dollars. This is an expensive sport/hobby/passion.

A dirt bike is a great choice for a new rider. If you don't plan on off roading it make sure to get some good street tires. Look for a 4 stroke like the Suzuki dr350 ktm has some great bikes but if price is an issue Honda or Suzuki would be your best choice.

Yep, get yourself a supermotard motorcycle.
They have enough power to get you out of trouble and they are tired in the way they feel unlike the 250 4-stroke motorcycles. It will have a better suspension set-up that you can adjust to suit your riding and bodyweight as well.
I think you will learn a lot quicker on one of these and even be able to give it to some of the sportbike riders through the twisties if you end up mastering it!
Good luck, I know if I had my time again, I would go one of these types of machines!

A dirt bike would be OK, but a well set-up dual-sport, like a Kawasaki KLX 250, would be even better. It gives you the ability to go off-road, with enough handling and performance to be a reasonable street ride too.

The 400cc Suzuki would be the best dual purpose for you. It's the DRZ400. I have ridden them and I liked it a lot.
It won't have the speed of the Ninja 250, and it won't get 60mpg. The ninja 250 can go over 100mph depending on the rider.
Maybe you should consider a ninja 500?

off road great, i'd recommend an endro with head light and tail light to meet laws in most states.. i'd say a 175cc engine a good start for most 12 years to 16 yrs.
older than that maybe a 250cc. or 350 great...
