I got in an argument with a friend about the subject and in his defence he said that...
"If sit down and watch some of the Japanese Manga cartoons, you'll find that there a lot of references about incest in those cartoons."
Just found it curious...

Its not common...however just like everywhere else in the world, things do happen. There quite a few Japanese men who grow up obsessed with their mothers (mother complex) and more than enough mothers who are too focused on their sons (primarily where school and grades are concerned).
Also, just like everywere else in the world, once a story gets around, it kind of snowballs and makes everyone think that its omnipresent.
Having said that, my ex-girlfriends friend did in fact get divorced from her husband because he was waaaaaay to close to his mother. She caught them once in a rather inappropriate embrace. Its anyones guess what happend after that.

I've noticed that the Japanese anime and manga I've seen or read that have references about incest are usually between step-siblings or one of the siblings is adopted, anyway. Except for Angel Sanctuary, where that whole thing was rejected by Heaven itself, so... I wouldn't say it's common at all.

You see it's a misconception owing to the very open nature of Japanese culture that reflects in the anime and manga. Most of the time these so called references are merely poking fun and have no 'follow-up'. Instead of the zero tolerance attitude we have I think they acknowledge it in Japan and even cater entertainment (hentai and the sort mainly) for those who are, shall we say 'into' it.

Incest is not common or accepted in any society. The damage to the gene pool means that it damages the lineage. Societies that have a strong history of ancestry have a correspondingly strong taboo on incest. Even when we have analyze cultures that have supposedly permitted incest, we find that it has been with massively extended families, or it has in face been between non-blood relatives and adopted siblings.

It's common in some manga/anime genre. But it's not common in real Japan/Japanese.

That is just a fictional account. Many wierdos find it arousing .. like those in US who create those erotic stories abt incest and such stuff
