The present day Democratic Party still holds President Jackson as a hero and by ignoring this and other massacres of Native Americans while condeming the totally different goverment in Turkey-isn't Congress a total phony?

Both massacres are awful, but this is one the Democrats need to shut up about. Passing a pointless resolution to express our displeasure over something from the beginning of last century is only a good idea if people will feel better about us doing it. This won't make anyone feel better (after all, we aren't apologizing--we're pointing fingers), and it will hurt our relations with Turkey. Why anyone would want to pass this censure is beyond me--it's dumber than vetoing a four million dollar increase for kid's health care.

What kind of logic is this?
Condemn no Recognize!
Isn't the facts documented
quite clearly regarding the
US Indians...has this country
not over and over apologized
for its massacres of the
Indians. Have they not
been compensated
enough for you?
Turkey has done none
of the above for Armenians.
Furthermore Andrew Jackson
was never a hero, he came
very close to being impeached.
Please don't ever confuse one
major detail TURKS murdered
brutally 1.5 million Armenians
during world war1, and TURKS
today who deny the crimes
of their ancestors are just as
guilty.

The reason why countries don`t want to admit to this sort of thing is theres a chance they might have to pay out compensation .this is the same reason why ,although the Nazis had no choice but to admit the Holocaust they only admitted it in part .90 to 97%of the entire Gypsy population
in both south and east Europe were also exterminated .but this was suppressed because if it hadn`t been many countries on the winning side would have also been implicated .its only in the last few years that the extent of their suffering has been recognised by the UN and any compensation for even what was stolen from them has started trickling through.Where governments are concerned things are never as they seem .integrity ,and justice for others is never a top priority

As a 1/16th Cherokee I totally agree but what was done to the Native American Tribes in this country is a well known and established fact: no one denies it. In Turkey as well as the Muslim World in general, what was done to the Armenians is routinely denied. More importantly, what was done is permitted under Shari'a Law. The Turks are our allies and they are a proud, honorable people. This I know because I've been there but the truth is the truth. My only problem with it is our hands aren't clean enough to be pointing fingers!

I condemn both.

And the "it's a different government" argument is pretty weak. The Ottomans were TURKS. For that matter, you bring up the Cherokees... we have a different government than Andrew Jackson now, too. A massacre is a massacre. They all deserve to be condemned.

the 'indian removal program' institued under president jackson is most certainly not ignored...it is in all the history books and everything...the problem with the armenian genocide is that it is not recognized as such by either the turks, or most of the rest of the world. i say it did happen as stated, but this is not my call, it is for some other body to resolve. and if that body is the u.n., good luck to the armenians...

Well heck, why don't Congress just set aside the next month or so and just pass resolution after resolution condemning people and countries who have committed genocide over the past couple of milliniums? At the least they would be accompishing SOMETHING.

True... very lame

Why don't let other countries pay the price of their ancient empires too like Romans, Soviets, Mongols etc... they all killed and occupied other nations once upon a time in history

Anyway, by condemning they won't benefit from anything.
