Every traveller to come down the QLD coast stops at Airlie Beach. It is "the gateway" to the Whitsunday Islands, so you can visit the islands and the Great Barrier Reef easily. It is full of travellers, so has quite a transient atmosphere, but lots of like minded people who you can share tips with. It can be overcrowded, but for a night out it can be hilarious.

Sydney to Cairns is only about 3000km and there are lots of places on the way. Newcastle, Coffs Harbour, Byron Bay, Brisbane, the Sunshine Coast, Rockhampton, the Whitsundays, and Townsville are just a few. Unless you like screaming kids, oldies and drunken teenagers, avoid the Gold Coast but many people seem to like it, don't ask me why.

A couple of places you could stop are Mooloolaba and Caloundra on the Sunshine Coast - both have beautiful beaches and a friendly atmosphere. Plus they're not overcrowded with tourists!
