They can't do that to REAL football, it would be a disgrace! The fans would never let it happen.

To be accurate, Art, the game in London will only be the second regular-season game played outside the US, and the first outside North America. The first non-US game was played October 2, 2005 in Mexico City between the Cardinals and 49ers. The Wembley game this year (October 28) will be between the Dolphins and Giants and is an official Dolphins home game. It is, I believe, a sell-out, having had requests for half a million tickets in three days back in February.
With the waning of football's popularity in Britain, and the folding of NFL Europe this year, this is a fairly bold marketing move by the NFL. A more obvious choice would have been Germany, but this looks like it will be a success.
The question is a good one - is this an example that the EPL or other European leagues might want to emulate? Unfortunately, I think the answer is no.
The most obvious problem is scheduling. The NFL has a 16-game regular season and includes a bye week for every team. Unsurprisingly, both the Dolphins and the Giants have been given byes the following week and so will not lose much needed rest time because of the extended travel involved. You can do that easily in a league where each team plays only once a week. Of course, that is not so in soccer, especially for the top tier teams that people in the US would want to see. Not only do they have a overly long and crammed league schedule, but they already have numerous other competitions in which they play. It would be very difficult to fit a transatlantic trip in to that schedule. This is the ultimate dealbreaker here.
A second reason against it ever happening, for English teams at least, is that (unless it has changed dramatically since I left the UK) the Football League is run by a bunch of unimaginative stuffed shirts and assorted idiots. Even with US-based ownership of clubs (Man U, most obviously), I still don't see it getting serious consideration.
That having been said, if it were somehow to happen, I believe it would succeed just as well as the NFL looks like it will in the UK. Yes, professional soccer as a spectator sport is definitely still second-tier in the US, but do not underestimate the loyalty and fervency of the fan base here. There are plenty of transplanted European and Hispanic soccer fans everywhere. Toronto fans are as nuts as any you see in Europe. I do not think there would be any problem selling tickets, especially for the right teams (Man U, Arsenal, Chelsea, Fulham - they have 4 Americans on the team, after all! - Barcelona, Real Madrid, Bayern, AC Milan).
However, something else entirely might work out much better. European teams have already been playing exhibitions in the US and elsewhere for several years now. For the last three years, the MLS All-Star Game has been played against British teams - Fulham, Chelsea and Celtic (with the All-Stars winning all three, by the way). There is definitely an interest in playing games over here. Moreover, one of the biggest successes this year in US soccer was the inaugural Superliga, which involved four US and four Mexican teams (notorious for David Beckham's knee injury in the final). This kind of thing works out well for the non-US teams who would get much needed off-season playing time against opposition in mid-season form, because soccer in the US is a summer sport. So - how about a multi-continent invitational tournament? And by multi, I mean bringing in the South Americans as well. Now THAT would definitely put the butts on seats.

The Ice hockey games were two weeks ago, the basketball game was last night (both at the O2 arena, but the NBA game was just an exhibition).
I, personally, wouldn't be too bothered if we did the same with our football sides, but I don't think it'd have much of an effect.
Like the games that were staged here, how many people noticed that weren't fans already?
I hope more people start following the NHL (it's like footy used to be before it became a non-contact sport - there'd be less divers if they knew they were going to clobbered next-time) and if this helps, good.

How would the fans feel about losing a home game? It's a little bit different with the NHL and NBA that play 80 games a year. Man United and Liverpool only have some many league games in front of their hometown fans.

I like your proposal. I would love to see Man U, Liverpool, and/or Arsenal play a league game somewhere here in the US. I think that would be awesome.

Randy Lerner, who owns the "real" football team the Cleveland Browns in the USA recently purchased the Aston Villa Football Club. So maybe he will start to bring them over for some games.
Just as there is a small audience in Europe for American stle football there is a small audience in America for European style football.
