Something had to give and it was the CL. It is so hard for teams in the 'top three' leagues in Europe to win all competitions, or even complete the double of winning the CL and their domestic league. Apart from Barca, the winners of the last 3 Champions League were teams that were out of contention of their respected leagues by March, so they put all their eggs in one basket and concentrated on the CL. The reason why Barca won it in 2006 was because they had their league title wrapped up by the time of the Semi Final/Final and therefore they put all their energies into just winning the CL.
& Ac milan,while milan performed suprerbly this decade under ancelotti in CL, they haven't got a decent challenge for their league title yet. this is a point raised up well by Arsène , who said CL winners.

and liverpool for example again in 2005 they were 5th in the league but won the CL.

IT IS REALLY A SHAME THAT TEAMS PLAYING FOR NOTHING IN THEIR DOMESTIC LEAGUE SAVE THEIR BEST FOR THE CL, SUCH AS LIVERPOOL AND AC MILAN.
THEY OWE IT TO THEIR FANS AND THEIR DOMESTIC LEAGUE WHY THEY ARE PLAYING IN EUROPE.

Even for the richest teams, it seems that they can't buy enough elite players to be able to field two starting line-ups capable of competing with the best. When you add all of the domestic cups to domestic league play to European play to national team play, the teams that make it to the end of European play have too many weeks of playing two games a week. That ultimately either gets them knocked out of European play or costs them points in their domestic league which is why so few CL and UEFA Cup winners also win their domestic league (and why other doubles and trebles are also uncommon).
Teams decide their priority at the start of the season and then have to decide their priorities again over the winter break from European play. I think it is impossible to vigorously pursue both at the same time.
