I'd have to say D is the correct statement.
The book WAS popular (definitely what we'd call a bestseller), it DID help fuel the Abolitionist movement (which was primarily concentrated in the North, although there were some Southerners who also advocated this, like the Grimke sisters [who, I believe, left their native South Carolina and moved to the North because of this]), and did cause a 'backlash' among some Southern writers who perpetuated the image of the happy, loyal slaves who loved their masters.
Interestingly, however, the hated (and hateful) villain, the overseer Simon Legree, is a Northerner by birth!

Harriet Beecher Stowe's book is now considered to be the catalyst that started the American Civil War, because it opened everybody's eyes to the horrors of slavery in the Deep South. So, question A is correct, because it provided a motivation to eradicate it. Question B is also correct because it was an immediate best-seller, everybody wanted a copy, including President Abe Lincoln, who encouraged Harriet to write it because it was the truth. Question C is probably true, because the plantation owners profited from slavery, but Question D is not true because the South hated it with a vengence.

I'd put D.. simply because it's a stupid answer. And couldn't quantified as the truth at the time.
I mean.. could most sotherners read? Maybe half? ok we'll say 1 in 8. Ok, now did the resto of the southerners buy the book? If they did... who found out that they "loved" it. I own books that I .. kinda sorta like, or bought accidently...
the qualifying words just kill that answer.
