I would say your imagination is the best magical thing that has failed to work so far. You are putting limits on things, and that is limiting yourself. You just have to let go of preconcieved notions and believe in magic for magic's sake!

So far wishing on a star did not work, nor has the wishbone thing.
The rabbit's foot brought luck...bad luck...to the rabbit
and the 4 leaf clover did not attract any leprechauns so that I could get the bag of gold.
The rainbow's end keeps running away whenever I get close to it.
Makes me wonder if magick actually does anything at all

Nothing is going to guarantee your wishes to become real. The only thing you can do is ask. Asking with talismans or other magickal means is just amplification. The gods can (and usually do) still say "no" or "not yet." You just have to listen to them and know that they know what's best for you.
by the way, the best means of getting something that I am wishing for is sending out like energy. If you want money, be filanthropic. If you want love, be nice to other people. It doesn't have to be aimed where you want it to come from. Just send it out into the ether.
