WOW!
I doubt seriously that there are many Americans that endorse torture. But it seems everyone is hyper about interrogation technics that are dressed up by the media to equate with the horrible atrocities committed by the Nazis or the Japanese during WW2. From what I can tell, they are very different.
Granted, information gained thru torture is many times unreliable, but sometimes the threat is enough to loosen valuable information. If their only fear is that they may not get their cookies after dinner, there's not much incentive to give it up.
It's pretty easy, sitting here in my comfortable living room, to decry the use of "torture", but the next time we get attacked by those nice people, and I lose family members and friends, I going to be asking why we didn't know about it before hand. Kinda like the way left does now about 9/11.
Jimmy Carter may be a hero to many, to me he is a publicity seeking old fool. Airing dirty laundry just gives our enemies more ammunition. He should voice his concerns to governmental agencies that could do something about it, not the world media.

Give him a break. This is all part of the retirement package Bubba promised! After he pardoned him January 21, 1977 as a felon for draft dodging . The fast tract with Harper Collins publishing via Rupert Murdoch and millions in speaking engagements. Hooked up with the Clinton initiative the "Giving" is all to their own bank accounts.
What about Israel? When will he slip up and go back there? What teamwork. I'm telling you. Carter can't lose. No more peanuts for money anymore. Who cares if he Bashes the current President? It's the popular story to tell right now. Thanks.
*note: Personally, I am in awe with all the talk about torture now during this election season. What did we think has been going on all this time? Tickle me Elmos making prisoner's giggle out information vital to national & worldwide security. It's being exaggerated and added to the propaganda machine. Politics as usual. Research each Presidents records, if you can find them!
Update: I'm reading thru Harper Collins new book releases and one is The Greatest Presidential Stories Never Told by Rick Beyer. It notes a UFO sighting by Carter years back?
I know Clinton has another book this month as well .

Well, I don't want to sound like I'm a big Carter fan, because I'm not. So how about what Bruce Springsteen said recently;
This is the first time in the history of our country that a President has taken us into a war knowing it was under false pretenses. The first time we have tortured and admitted to it. The first time people in our country could be arrested and not given a reason. The first President that thinks he is immune to the laws and interprets the constitution how he sees fit. The list goes on, but people like you don't have an open mind to anything. Our country hasn't been this divided since the civil war. You probably had an orgasm watching the abuse in that prison, but my first thought were how many americans will be abused and tortured because of it! Oh and if you don't realize it, we'll be getting a new worst ex-president in about 15 months .

There's no doubt the American government is currently using aggressive action to interrogate imprisoned terrorists. How aggressive remains to be seen. Whether it is torture or near-torture or just aggressive has yet to be seen. Personally, I don't believe a thing coming out of the "main-stream" media. But let's assume its all true.
I got a question. Does the Geneva convention extend itself to terrorists? Terrorists, by definition, are not military personal. They wear no uniforms. They are not held directly accountable to a government. Then again, you can't consider them civilians. After all they are the threat.
There's an honest debate to be had here. One that needs to happen. The world needs to decide exactly what a terrorist is and what right a captured terrorist has, if any. Instead, we get nut cases on the left who will condemn Bush for breathing simply because he's Bush.
And, assuming again, real torture is what's happening, I personally have no compassion for terrorists. Anyone who would target and murder civilians to make a political point needs to be sent to the Hell they so richly deserve as soon as possible. In these times, they think they get virgins in every room. I say we let them find out.
/EDIT: Beatchanter, you just showed yourself to be a hypocrite. And unpatriotic according to your own definition of what patriotic is.

This may seem like hipocracy, but its not. You see, the answer lies in what liberals believe the definition of torture is.
To them, YES America tortures! Did you hear about the loud rap music and toilets not facing the proper direction? What other country would dare do that other than America?

Point 1 - He's old. And the older a person gets, the less likely they are to check their tongue, even if they remember the curse of the sound bite.
Point 2 - The second set of White House memos redefining torture really makes me shake my head as Bush ran on Clinton asking for the definition of "is". This has not brought dignity back to the White House.
Point 3 - The rest of what he says tends to get lost in the hyper media we have. On CNN, they only mentioned in the follow up that Carter called for human rights protections in the countries he was there as a PEACE ENVOY to.
Point 4 - Distracting us from his mission as a ENVOY was the goal of the leaders of the Sudan. Unfortunately they succeeded, as even CNN, gave more time to the obstacles and distractions he met, rather than the Genocide.

Jimmy Carter is a former president, so what he says at this point has no affect on the country.

Anyone who wouldn't denounce the reality of torture and the war-mongering of the right is either un-American or doesn't have a working brain.
Carter is only speaking the truth, and pointing out the obvious. It's so obvious, this isn't even a real issue.

Truth is, America has fallen so low in this regard we cannot be defended for it. Because of the Bush administration, we systematically torture prisoners, it is unamerican, and, harms our reputation abroad as a lighted beacon of freedom for the world.
