I don't have a middle name, just a first and last. I am 35 years old, Monica, from New Jersey. My children (4) all have middle names though, as does my husband. It is a personal choice. My maiden name is extremely unusual though - Szutarski, maybe if I had a more common name I would have been given a middle name? My parents are not alive to ask!

It's not required, but if you have a common surname and want to give your baby a reasonably common first name, it might be a good idea so there's something extra to identify them by in case they have the exact same name as someone else at school / college in the future. Even if it's just an extra initial to put on the name tapes / belongings.
I really don't think it matters how the names "sound together". How often do you ever hear the names together? Unless you actively plan to use both names (something like Mary Jane), when you get married and that's just about it. I just picked two names I liked for both my kids and all I worried about was that you couldn't make anything rude out of a combination of them or their initials. I can't remember the last time I used my middle name other than on official forms, and suspect most of my friends don't even know what it is. But it does mean that, for instance, my medical records don't get confused with the very occasional person who has the same first name and surname as me.

Nope, you don't have to give them a middle name. I believe I asked why even do it on answers a few months ago and got some great explanations of how it started. But no one says you have to have a middle name and I agree with you that some middle name suggestions just don't fit. For example, aren't we all tired of Ann, Lynn, et al as middle names. Boring.

I don't think there's any law requiring a child be given a middle name. I have a nephew who has two middle names, and on forms, he just uses the "first" middle name...
Who's going to care, either way, except maybe your daughter herself. She might feel weird about it.

Many people do, but they are optional. My brothers both have them, but my sister and I do not. You are right though- some names are just so special, middle names seem to distract from them (mashed together is a good whay to phrase it, lol).

My partner and his brother dont have midle names as their mum decided that their surname was long enough and didnt want to make it any longer but then all their children have middle names with the surname. Its personal preference and if you dont want to give a middle name then dont.
