Managers and coaches vote upon players in their own league, with the caveat that they cannot vote for players on their own team. So, no one is ever unanimous, and we quickly see the great failing of this methodology: any given manager, and let's pick on Torre just as an example, sees intradivision teams at most 19 times a season, and less so for extra-division opponents. So if Joe & Co. got to see, oh, Peralta turn three sparkling DPs in six games, and maybe another two highlights on SportsCenter, Jhonny's gonna get some votes. Not that this is wrong, just unbalanced due to the woefully small sample size. (And two factors also play in which really should not influence a defensive honor -- offensive performance and name recognition. Look no further than Palmeiro taking home the 1999 AL 1B GG after playing 28 games there.)
And of course it's even worse for pitchers, who may not face a given team at all in a season. Not that Maddux isn't good, but 16 in a row? Is everyone THAT certain that no other pitcher in the NL since the 80s has been a better defenseman? Or is it just not taken seriously? (Note that no reliever has ever won a Gold Glove, and they tend to get into more games. Annual momentum comes into play a lot in the GG voting.)

Originally, Rawlings - the baseball glove manufacturer determined who won the awards. The first year was 1957. Now the award is voted on by managers and coaches of each team. However, they can't vote for players on their team. The voting occurs after the season is over.

Well, Chipmaker nailed that one, especially in the description of what's wrong with the current voting system.

there is no voting for the gold glove..it is earned by the player who has the best fielding %...and has played the minuimum amount of games payed which i beleive is at least 75% of the games,,,for the outfield it is the top 3 no matter which field he played
and i think they are announced before the WS
