Hi, I'm a British student studying French, and my partner is Canadian, currently living in B.C. Next year I am hoping to work as a teaching assistant in Quebec, and he would like to come with me, but he speaks little to no French. Of course he can learn enough of the basics to be polite, go shopping, ask directions, etc. before we go, but realistically how likely is he to find work?
p.s. I have no control over where in Quebec I will be posted, but it is unlikely to be Montreal, possibly Quebec City but more likely a smaller town.
Thanks, Natalie

What are his skills? If he does software development or is not in the public eye, then there are companies that may hire him. However, if you are outside of Montreal or far from the Ontario or US border, finding a job will be much more difficult.
However, all news is not bad. If he has a year to learn, he can take intensive French courses at night to pick up the basics.
The other option is if you can get posted to a small town near the Ontario border, you can work in Quebec, he can work in Ontario, and you both find a place to live that allows you both to commute to your jobs.

Instead of Quebec, try Ontario, Manitoba or New Brunswick all three of these provinces have a large French speaking communities and finding an English only job for your partner shouldn't be a problem. I live in a bi-lingual community in Eastern Ontario and my partner didn't have a problem finding an English job although she does have basic school French.
I personally I've found that you should find the French speaking peoples of the three provinces above more accommodating to your Parisian French than the peoples of Quebec.

I would suggest going to Lennoxville, Sherbrooke, the people who live there are mostly english-speaking and there are a few schools around there that are english schools, such as Alexander Galt Regional High school and there is champlain college and bishops' university. I am pretty sure you can find a teaching post in this area. Lennoxville is a beautiful place and there are also two elementary schools there so that could be a plus if you have children. There is a mall a bit over 20 minutes away called the Carrefour De L'estrie (in sherbrooke), its huge =]
So anyways id suggest the Sherbrooke/Lennoxville area. A one bedroom apartment in Lennox costs about 500$.
Lennoxville is full of really old houses and gorgeous big trees that line the streets and theres' the downtown area and then towards the schools is the country side (alex.galt and the colleges)

He is likely to find work if he is doing business with people outside of Quebec, to the US, etc. (i.e. sales), it is possible to get employment in Montreal only speaking english but probably not having to deal with the public for obvious reasons. In montreal, St-Leonard, and certain places downtown are areas where english is spoken a little more often. Anyway, his best bet is to learn french so he doesn't aggrevate anyone and finds it easier to fit in.
Il faut savoir comment parler francais dans la plupart de Montreal, mais ... comme vous aller voir..c'est comme ca au Quebec!

I your partner does not speak French, its chances depends on its studies. Working with the public would have the same success then being in Britain and look for a job without knowing English: next to none. If he is a specialist in a field, he will have greater chances.

In Montreal or Gatineau, there is no problem at all if you don't speak French... Quebec city could be a little bit difficult and the rest of the province ... forget it!

The Assistant experience is less good in Canada. In France you can be immersed in French but in Canada, it's bilingual at best. Go for a small town if you are asked.
You might find the winters easier in France.
Don't get me wrong, Canada is a wonderful place but may not be the experience the assistant program is designed for.
[Off topic, I know.]
