I was trying to say the media has to label everything. Two people with the same illness should react the same way but one kills the other don't, there has to be another factor.

It is upsetting and irritating when the mental card is played. There are too many people with legitimate mental problems. It negates their sad situation. And, in addition, the general public loses its compassion to people who are truly ill. It perpetuates a negative stigma for the mentally ill. I do not like this at all.

It isn't a -reason- but it is the -cause-. Like, if you're unhappy at work, and grump at your friends, being unhappy at work isn't a good reason, but it is a -cause- for your grumping.

My own take on mental illness and crime is that if you commit a crime to accomplish something normal people don't -want- to accomplish, you're crazy in some way (even if not in the legal sense). If you rob a bank, you get money, which most people want. If you come into a school and shoot people and kill yourself, you are doing something normal people don't even -want- to do. (Barring the occasional fantasy about a particularly hated teacher.)

By the way, gun control saves lives and makes the world safer, and I'm still against it. Freedom of speech is at least as dangerous as freedom to bear arms, but it's worth it.

And I'm a flaming liberal, in favor of gay marriage, socialized medicine, subsidized public transport, and higher taxes -- and I live about fifteen minutes from that shot-up school.

I believe people use mental problems as a crutch every single day. I've seen too much in the last few years to even begin to tell you about it here, but YES, I believe they do.

I also believe if you dig deep enough you can find a "mental" issue with every crime that is committed. It's just an excuse.....

Sometimes yes, but like we saw at Virginia Tech there are ample warning signs about these people but we either don't pick up on them or follow through, or are kept from dealing with them because of some equally insane rules and regulations. As the saying goes guns don't kill people, people kill people.

If he was suffering from depression, I understand why he killed himself. Lots of people do. But you're right, depression and/or mental problems give nobody any right to take another's life.

I am diagnosed bi-polar. No one ever gave me a break for it. Infact, I usually get put in jail for my actions.

Getting a plee of insanity is near impossible these day. They have way too many methods of proving you are able to devise right from wrong. If they do determine you are insane, they determine who is responsible for allowing you to be free enough to hurt someone.

if guns were illegal then the issue of mental issues wouldnt even be considered. the fact that anyone can get a gun in america is wrong. they say guns dont kill people and that people kill people. well sorry but the bloody gun helps!!!
