I guess it means that a geography of a country dictates it's economy, trade, defense policy, type of settlements, etc, therefore influencing it's politics and history. I believe the ancient Greeks were studying that issue in theory (could be Aristotle, not sure).

lupiter gets it first........what your geography is like sets what happens to you as a country...example, Switzerland is in the middle of some hairy mountains, making it hard to attack so hardly anyone ever has......Poland on the other hand, is on a flat level plain stuck between Germany and Russia so it has been attacked and overrun countless times in history.....England is an island protected by the sea and as long as the Royal Navy was the strongest in the world ( 1588-1941) no one could threaten England.........Russia like Poland is easy to invade so it has been attacked by the Mongols and the Huns from the east and the French and the Germans and the Swedes from the west many times....no wonder they're paranoid!
