How big is the picture? Ask at the hardware store as most hangers list weight capacities—there are those that can support the weight of large mirrors. You may not need to go as deep as you think, though placement of pipes and cables should be considered. Again consult your hardware guy or who ever sold the picture. Which wall is your choice..

You can scan the wall with a deep scanning stud finder. The one I have deep scans and signals when there is a power line. It also has a different signal for metal. I can, of course, find the wall studs with it.

Once I have located, roughly, where power and piping MIGHT be, I avoid these areas. I also prefer to locate hangers on wall studs, when hanging heavy objects. I get a very good anchor, that way. Use more than one anchor, if the picture is really heavy. If the frame is greater than 16", you can locate two studs with a stud finder, and place your anchors right into the studs.

The Q is a bit confusing. Why do you choose to hang it where there are obstructions? What type of pipes are they? Cables? Are the pipes overhead close to a ceiling? Can you hang from them? Using chains?
