I have tried washing them several times, and still they feel very rough on my skin. Is there something I can add to the wash water to break down whatever they put on the sheets?

Perhaps you need to buy a different type of material...

Sometimes the material matters, not just the thread count. I buy mine at Linen's & Things - you can feel the material before you buy it.

I have 400's that are very crisp and thick feeling, and I also have 250's and 300's that are softer than cashmere - all made from different types of cotton.

Bamboo sheets are also very soft. I'm not sure the thread count, but they are supposed to be more durable than cotton. Linen's & Things sell those, too.

Try going to a place like Bed, Bath and Beyond where you can feel the fabric before you make your purchase. I have 400 count sheets that are so soft they make me want to stay in bed forever. The higher the thread count the more durable the fabric but it does not necessarily insure the texture will be soft. Find a place that allows you to feel the fabric.

Companies use formaldehyde as a preservative when packing/shipping clothing and textiles. Are you using hot or cold water? Sometimes a good hot water wash breaks it down well. Are you using a liquid softener with the sheets, as well as a softener sheet in the dryer?

It's the sizing and dyes used in the manufacture of the thread. Takes several washings to break it down. Love my 660's! Try adding liquid softener.
