Sydney is a very very VERY expensive city. Safest would be to live in the eastern suburbs but prices are really high there, 220 dollars a week is not likely. Maybe somewhere around Maroubra or Randwick, but it's still pricey. The western suburbs are ok.. Parramatta, bankstown, burwood, much cheaper there.
Good Luck

You'd be struggling to get accommodation in a desirable area for that amount, but you are best off trying to live in the Eastern Suburbs or the Inner West; Glebe, Newtown,Rozelle etc. The North West suburbs of Baulkham Hills etc are nice but a long way from the attractions of Sydney and without many flats, its mainly a family area with large sprawling houses particularly around Glenhaven etc. Perhaps you could try the Sutherland Shire or the Northern Beaches, you might have some luck around Dee Why. Parramatta is okay, but not for everyone, likewise for Bankstown, Merrylands etc.

I know a lot about UWS and not all courses are offered on all campuses. What course are you doing? Because the courses are divided between different campuses: Arts/Humanities/Languages/Education/Soc Science: Bankstown, Penrith Business, Law, IT: Campbelltown, Parramatta Nursing: Parramatta, Hawkesbury Psychology: Bankstown, Penrith Engineering, Communication Arts: Penrith Natural/Environmental Sciences/Science Education: Hawkesbury, Parramatta (North Campus) I'm sure you'll be living on whichever campus you'll study at. They are all far apart so it wouldn't make any sense to study on one and live on another. There is also a 'home campus' rule at UWS. You are officially enrolled on one campus so you need to apply for approval to study on other campuses, provided there's room. I'm sure it's the same for residential colleges too. Overall, Sydney is very safe compared to other cities around the world. You will have to be VERY unfortunate to encounter an attack. It's like a grain of sand being picked from the beach so I won't comment on that. Sure, some areas aren't as pretty but they still aren't bad bad.

Safest = North Shore, but you would be looking at around $280 a week for a studio in St Leonards (The ones I mean are at a place called 'the Forum' a very convenient spot, look it up on google), for what you are willing to pay you would easily be able to find a nice room in a share house, where I live (with 2 others) we charge $210 for a huge room with ensuite, good sized townhouse in a very conveniant location.
St Leonards is conveniant for the City (15 minutes by train to the centre) and is a walk to Crows Nest, which means good restuarants, cafes, shopping, etc - think about it....

I have read some answers and dont listen to the suburbs listed here esp. guildford and merrylands area. terrible crime rate. Best and safest suburbs to live in are North western region eg. Glenhaven, Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills, Dural etc. Affordable if you have a fairly decent income. Now if you are Turkish for example you might want to live in Auburn thats where they all live.

Australia is basically a safe place and its cities are safe. There is crime, there is anywhere, but if you are sensible you shouldn't have any problems. Wherever you can find a flat in your range will be OK.
