There's a link to the photo. I coudn't find it anywhere on the web and it was a little disconcerting as the thing was about an inch in length and seemed really keen on landing on my face every time I tried to sleep! It has very long antennae, and the shape reminds me of a mosquito.

I really don't think it's a dragonfly before anyone mentions it:

I'd love to know what it is as I've honestly never seen one before and am deeply intrigued!

PS. I'm sorry about the terrible quality, it's the best I could do with my camera!

I know it's neither a daddy long legs nor a crane fly, and I've looked english insects up and found nothing!

looks like an Ichneumon wasp; not to worry, they don't sting people. They're parasitic wasps, but they parasitize grubs and caterpillars. This is one that doesn't have much of an ovipositor; some of them actually drill through bark with theirs to reach beetle larvae, and their ovipositors can be as long as their bodies!

I do wish I could tell you what it is, but I can tell you it isn't a Crane Fly/Daddy Long Legs (and if it were, they don't sting) - try seeing if you can find insect identifying sites online, or look in bookshops for an Observer Book of Insects, there is bound to be one.
Good luck.

it looks like a wasp - not a british wasp but a south african wasp - they sting and are quite nasty.
it's not a daddy long legs (or crane fly) which is a male mosquito and harmless.
it could be a hornet?

Hey man, that is a Crane Fly. Be careful, cause they can sting worse than a hornet

John R is right - it's a parastic wasp.
lays its eggs inside paralysed spiders or caterpillars.
