Has anyone ever tried this and how do you go about getting it?

Two options - you can get it for free on the NHS but you will have to wait 3-4 months if you are assessed as needing it by a doctor. First step would be to ask your doctor for a referal for assessment.

If you are prepared to pay for it out of your own pocket then I would contact a local mental health charity and ask if they can recommend a practitioner. You can also look in the Yellow Pages and choose one yourself, but check them out thoroughly before committing any money. You would contact the practitioner yourself and go in for an assessment interview. If you are accepted for treatment then you are facing somewhere between £20-£100 per treatment, depending on the qualifications and experience of the practitioner and what treatment you opt for.

Assessment interviews are only to determine whether you would really benefit from treatment, as it is unethical to charge people for treatment they don't need.

I looked up a hypnotherapist in the Yellow Pages and he recommended cognitive behavioural therapy instead - so it was by accident that I found one. Seriously though, www.yell.co.uk is an excellent site for finding one. Just search for Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. I also recommend an excellent book called "Feeling Good - The New Mood Therapy" by David D Burns, M.D. I have tried C.B.T and it takes a bit of self discipline. It's worth it though. I wish you the best of luck.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy is based on the idea that our thoughts cause our feelings and behaviors, not external things, like people, situations, and events. The benefit of this fact is that we can change the way we think to feel or act better even if the situation does not change.
