As I understand it you want a DVD player/burner. You can purchase one for about $50.00. and you can put it in yourself or pay a service about $50. to do it. If you are pretty handy and a careful person, it isn't really hard to do. If I can be of further help, let me know.

Have done such stuff before?
It can be pretty simple, even for a first timer.
I am pretty sure that the cd drive is a IDE one
So buy a dvd drive that has IDE connectors
Plug the pc from the mains
Open the casing
Have a good look (Lots of wires, nt to be scared of)
There are two connectors at the back of the cd drive:
1. For the power (small rectangle)
2. For the IDE Connector (Large rectangle)
Unplug those two
Unscrew the cd drive from the mounting case
Now unplug the IDE connector from the board
Plug in the new IDE for your DVD drive in the same place
Mount your dvd drive in the mounting case
Plug in the power and IDE connectors
Plug in the mains see if it works
Remember: Minimum contact with the motherboard components as well as the Ram. They are very sensitive, and any electrostatic current passing from u to these devices can just blow them up!
Be careful

This is an easy one. Find the drive that fits you needs. A name brand one if possible Dell Hp whatever you may have to find out from a computer store such as Comp Usa if it is correct for your Dell. The newer computers are a little different now and it would be a good thing to do( get the correct type. It will come with a setup disc for installation. Shut down the computer, disconnect power, take the case off, remove old drive and install and hook up the new one. Reinstall case hook up power. Start the computer and then install the drivers per user manual.

Hello, Hugh! You should be able to install a new CD/DVD drive yourself without any trouble. If you have your Dell Owner's Manual, it has a section describing how to add/replace parts (Pg. 59 deals with CD/DVD drives). It will explain how to open the case and access the part to be replaced. If you no longer have the original Owner's Manual, the link below is a PDF copy from Dell's website.
Incidentally, you can usually get better deals when you order computer parts online; something like the Lite-On drive linked below (around $35 shipped) should work great, and it is even black to match your case. Good luck! :-)

Either pull the old drive out and put the new drive in or open a 5 1/4 inch bay and put it in so you have 2 drives. If using it on a cable with another device move the jumper on back of new drive to slave position. Theres a diagram on back of drive near pins showing what each postion is. Just unplug the power cable to your computer before you operate on it. Simple. If you plan to add it buy a retail version that has a cable, screws and burning software. Should also come with instructions.
