Im a professional woodworker, and contractor... I highly recommend Titebond II for hold and safety. Ive used it for years, and have never seen a glue joint fail. The Material Safety Data Sheets (required by OSHA) indicate that this type of glue is about as safe as you can get. It is 'water borne'... that is.. it uses water as a carrier for the 'glue', and contains no hazardous chemicals. Here is a link where you can see several MSDS's (required for all chemicals in a work place -- and must be available to the employees for review, per OSHA regulations) - http://www.highlandwoodworking.com/index.asp?PageAction=Custom&ID=81
Gorilla glue is a polyurethane based glue -- and it is suggested that you call a doctor or ambulance if it is ingested. Other glues have similar warnings.
For a superior hold, and to be safe around kids and pets -- use the Titebond II. It's an industry standard, very good quality, and is easy to find.
Happy Woodworking

My first thought is glue gun. Glue guns tend to leave stringy, spider web looking strands too. Hot glue definitely dries rubbery.

PVA wood glue, can be bought anywhere, but why you would want to ingest it is beyond me.
PVA = Poly vinyl acetate
